Learn how to restrict replies by choosing who can reply to a post when composing it or after it has already been published on X (formerly called Twitter).
Anyone can reply to your post made from your public X account. This even includes people who don’t follow you.
But you have the option to limit replies to your posts. This way, you can prevent unwanted comments under your posts and have a meaningful, focused conversation with a smaller set of people.
Remember that even if you limit replies, people can still quote-tweet you.
You can restrict who can reply to your post before posting it or after it has gone live.
Before posting on X
1) Open the official X app or access the web interface at x.com.
2) Start creating a new tweet from scratch.
3) Tap Everyone can reply.
4) Choose who can reply to a tweet by selecting one of the available options:
- Everyone: This is the default setting, and it lets anyone post replies. For public accounts, it means everyone will continue to be able to reply. If your tweets are protected, the setting means that only people who follow you will continue to be able to reply.
- Verified accounts: Only people who are verified on X or have subscribed to X Premium can reply.
- Accounts you follow: Only accounts that you follow, as well as anyone you mention in your published posts, will be allowed to post replies.
- Only accounts you mention: Only people mentioned in the tweet will be able to reply.
After the post is live on X
You can also adjust the audience for a post after it has been published on X.
1) Open the official X app or access x.com in a web browser.
2) Navigate to a posted tweet on your profile.
3) Tap the three dots icon for that post and choose Change who can reply.
4) Now, select from Everyone, Verified accounts, Accounts you follow, or Only accounts you mention.
X will change the visibility settings of the published post according to your choice.
What to know about changing conversation participants
Other X users can easily see that you have limited who can reply to a post.
People outside your audience will see a grayed-out reply icon indicating they’re not allowed to reply but can still view, repost, repost with comments, and like the post.
If you restrict replies to followers, those who don’t follow you will see the icon. And if you’re not included in a post’s audience, you’ll see a message saying, “You can’t reply to this.”
Replies and reposts of your post will inherit the restrictions you placed on the root post, unlike reposts with comments that won’t inherit the post’s underlying restrictions.
