Apple discontinues 15-inch M2 MacBook Air and 13-inch M1 model; puts 13-inch M2 MacBook Air under $1,000 for the first time

Following the March 4 introduction of the refreshed MacBook Air laptops powered by the M3 chip, Apple no longer offers the 13-inch M1 MacBook Air laptop and its 15-inch M2-powered counterpart. It also made the 13-incher a $100 cheaper.

Some resellers may continue offering the discontinued MacBook Airs while stock lasts, but Apple no longer carries them. With the removal of the 13-inch M1 model, Apple no longer offers any laptops powered by the M1 chip.

The M1-equipped MacBook Air is among the very first Apple silicon computers, and was the last wedge-shaped laptop in the company’s lineup. Given the notebook arrived in 2020, it didn’t make sense to continue offering it in 2024.

Following these changes, the MacBook Air lineup now looks like this:

  • 13-inch M2 MacBook Air: Starting from $999
  • 13-inch M3 MacBook Air: Starting from $1099
  • 15-inch M3 MacBook Air: Starting from $1299

You can compare their tech specs using Apple’s Compare Mac Models page.

The new M3 MacBook Air is available to pre-order ahead of retail availability on Friday, March 8. All the MacBook Airs the iPhone maker currently sells remain available in the Midnight, Starlight, Space Gray and Silver color finishes.

Apple also slashed the price of the M2-powered 13-inch MacBook Air by $100, bringing the baseline model from the $1099 it was priced before down to $999.

This is Apple’s typical modus operandi: Anytime it refreshes a particular device category, the company optimizes the offering by leaving only strategically chosen previous-generation configurations in the lineup. This is a common marketing tactic designed to gently nudge would-be buyers toward the most recent models.

To illustrate the point, Apple debuted the baseline 13-inch M2 MacBook Air with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of internal storage in June 2022 at $1199. But after launching the 15-inch M2 MacBook Air in June 2023, the company slashed its starting price by $100 down to $1099.
