I just want to take a moment and congratulate everyone here on making it to the weekend, again. And as a reward, here is another edition of our Apps of the Week roundup. This week we have some great picks for you, including a match-maker for solo travelers, a social app for sparkling conversations, and an impressive offline music player. And as always, we’ve selected a fun new game for you to check out.
Bunji: find your travel mate
Do you ever think about just taking off one day? Leaving your job and other adult responsibilities behind you to travel the world? If so, Bunji is here to help. The app was built to connect you with other like-minded, solo travelers so you can pick a destination, hit all the hot spots, and never feel alone or unsafe in a foreign country. You can get matched directly with other people, or ask to join pre-planned trips. There are obviously 100 ways this could go terribly wrong (I saw Hostel), but the idea is still cool. Don’t let the 1-star review fool you—it’s a user complaining about the Facebook-only sign in option, which has since been remedied.
Quiver: Rare Conversations
I swear there is (was?) another app called Quiver—it was like a notebook app or something—that also had a purple quiver icon, but if this is it, they pivoted big time. Anyway, the purpose of this app is to encourage conversations. Every day, a new prompt is released to all Quiver users, and you cannot see other users’ answers u until you answer it yourself. This can obviously lead to sparkling (or awful) discussions you would otherwise not be having. Then there are of course profiles, and you can follow other users; the typical social media app stuff. This is another one of those well-meaning apps that has a massive range of outcomes. Neat idea, though.
Anywhere Offline Music Player
Anywhere Offline Music Player is…an offline music player…you can use…anywhere. I have no idea how many of these types of apps already exist, but hey, if the idea of having an offline music player sounds intriguing, and you don’t already have one, here is one you can try. Its interface comes across very Sound-Cloud-y, if that makes sense, and it’s chock-full of features like seamless music import from Files, Apple Music, and Dropbox, support for a wide range of audio formats, effortless playlist management, customizable equalizer, sleep timer, and more. Ok, you know what, this thing actually sounds awesome. I retract my previous sarcasm.
BROK the InvestiGator
If we’re being honest here, the title got me. I saw InvestiGator, I saw the icon, which is an image of a cartoon alligator in a purple hat, and I said to myself “this is the one.” You know, sometimes I spend hours sifting through hundreds of apps and games to bring you this weekly roundup, and then sometimes they jump out and slap me in the face. Anyway, in this game you obviously play as BROK, an alligator that is not only a detective (get it, Investi-gator?), but also a former boxer, who works with his [step?] son to figure out what killed his mom. All jokes aside, this is an impressive project. There is something like 20 hours of gameplay with puzzle-solving, clue-gathering, boss fights, 23,000 lines of voice acting, and local co-op for up to 4 players. I know what I’m doing this weekend!
