iTunes Store sending users to Apple’s TV app to buy or rent movie and TV shows

The iTunes Store only sells music and ringtones now, with a splash screen telling folks to buy or rent movies and TV shows via the Apple TV app instead.

“iTunes movies and your purchases have moved,” reads a message in the iTunes Store app after updating your iPhone and iPad to iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2. “You can buy or rent movies and TV shows and find your purchases in the Apple TV app.”

The message is displayed after selecting the Movies or TV Shows tab in the iTunes Store app, and includes two buttons to take the user to the Store section of the TV app or their purchases in the Library section in the sidebar.

Apple consolidates its video apps

The change has affected the gifting feature in the iTunes Store—Apple’s support document clarifies the customers can no longer gift movies or TV shows on their Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.

The release of iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, macOS Sonoma 14.2 and tvOS 17.2 has marked a turning point for the consolidation of Apple’s entertainment offerings.

For example, the Apple TV’s iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps have been discontinued, displaying a similar message about finding your purchases and rentals in the TV app. Although these apps are still present in tvOS 17.2, Apple can and probably will remove them from people’s Home Screens remotely at some point.

The TV app remains the place to stream entertainment from Apple TV+ and third-party apps that integrate with the app’s Up Next queue. But now, you can also find your purchased TV show and movies in the TV app, as well as buy or rent them. On top of that, the TV app allows you to subscribe to channels (MLS Season Pass, Showtime, Starz and others) and watch live sports (including Friday Night Baseball).

On the Mac, it supports importing personal videos that appear in the Home Videos category of the sidebar. Aside from the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, the TV app is also available on some smart TVs, streaming devices and gaming consoles.
