According to Apple’s release notes for iOS 17.2, the software update fixes an issue that may prevent wireless charging “in certain vehicles” from working on an iPhone.

This marks the second charging-related bug that has slipped through Apple’s quality control. After iOS 17.0 was launched, some BMW owners complained that their in-car chargers would cause issues with the NFC chip in their iPhones.

However, it’s unclear if the latest charging problem that iOS 17.2 addresses stems from the previous bug or is an entirely new problem.

The previous bug, fixed in iOS 17.1.1, caused an iPhone placed atop a vehicle’s charging pad to start and then stop charging. It also led to Apple Pay to failures. It affected the iPhone 15 family and specific BMW and Toyota cars.

However, some folks confirmed having the same charging problem with Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick vehicles, and General Motors said it was investigating the issue.

Qi2 charging support on iPhone

Speaking of wireless charging, iOS 17.2 also enables support for Qi2 accessories on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, so those devices can now charge wirelessly at 15W with a Qi2-compatible charger. iOS currently limits all Qi chargers to 7.5W, with 15W wireless charging only available via MagSafe.

Due to MagSafe-like magnetic alignment, Qi2 chargers promise to waste less energy than their Qi counterparts. The first Qi2-compatible chargers from Anker, Mophie, Satechi, Belkin and other companies are expected to arrive later this month.

iOS 17.2 brings other tweaks, along with a host of new features like Apple’s Journal app and various improvements across stock apps like Messages, Music and TV.
