The OpenAI blog announced new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT back in September, but voice chats were limited to paying subscribers. Today, voice interactions are available to all users for free in ChatGPT for iPhone and Android.

It’s a much more natural way of interacting with your AI assistant, and it’s free to all users of the updated app. “ChatGPT Voice rolled out for all free users,” OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman announced on X (formerly Twitter.

Instead of typing your prompt, hit the headphone icon and speak it aloud. ChatGPT uses OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition to transcribe spoken words into text.

Non-paying customers could use the iPhone’s Dictation feature for voice queries, but the assistant’s responses were limited to text, not voice. The new feature uses OpenAI’s Whisper feature to turn speech into text and read out answers.

You can also change the computer voice that ChatGPT uses to spew out its response by choosing between several male and female voices. OpenAI has collaborated with professional voice actors to create these text-to-speech voices.

Signed-in users can optionally turn on history to sync their conversations with the chatbots across devices and the web app. New users to the app should check out our quick guide to using the official ChatGPT app on your iPhone.

How ChatGTP works

The chatbot that took the world by storm uses artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) to answer complex queries naturally.

ChatGPT was trained as an autocomplete system by having it predict the next most probable word. When ChatGPT answers your query, however, its trained model uses live data to come up with the most probable answer, a process known as inference.
