Withings has a new smart scale that can help diabetes patients monitor their illness

Withings, a brand renowned for their quality HealthKit-compatible home health monitoring accessories, just this week launched a new smart scale product called the Body Pro 2 that helps patients monitor and manage chronic illness conditions, with a specific emphasis being put on diabetes complications.

Withings Body Pro 2 smart scale.

Body Pro 2 is a cellular-enabled smart scale that also features the same Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity features as Withings’ other smart scale products, and is intended to be used by patients who require specialized care from healthcare professionals. It offers an impressive one-year battery life on a single charge.

The Body Pro 2 features a powerful chip that can accurately assess weight within 50g/0.1-pound precision and track their weight trends on both the on-device full-color display or from the dedicated Withings health app. The scale has built-in gravity compensation that also uses your location to apply the correct gravity compensation to your weight measurement.

In addition to weight, Body Pro 2 features advanced body composition measurement features, letting you track your Body Mass Index (BMI) and whole body composition in terms of fat, muscle, water, and bone masses.

For diabetic patients, modular accessories that are available by prescription can use electrochemical skin conductance, a non-invasive measurement that helps detect early signs of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and foot ulcer risks. This is huge, as Withings says that up to 70% of diabetic patients will be affected by DPN and up to 50% of those will be asymptomatic.

Information collected from the smart scale can be shared directly with your healthcare provider, allowing patients to keep their doctors apprised of their health changes each day.

It’s worth noting that the Body Pro 2 is not available for just anyone to purchase. It’s a product that can be prescribed by a doctor to patients in need to help them monitor their condition(s).

The Body Pro 2 comes only a few months after the release of the Body Scan smart scale, which is available for consumers to purchase, and offers many of the same weight and body composition measurements, in addition to ECG and vascular age measurements.

It’s certainly interesting to see how technology is making at-home health monitoring easier than ever, and while also being less invasive than traditional health checkups.
