Apple might also supplant silicone accessories with eco-friendlier variants

The company might replace its entire lineup of silicone accessories such as iPhone cases, Apple Watch bands and more with eco-friendlier products.

MacRumors has learned that Apple has begun the process of phasing out eco-unfriendly accessories for ones made with next-generation materials. Accessories like the iPhone Silicone Case with MagSafe, Sport Band, Solo Loop and AirTag Loop are all expected to transition away from silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer.

If the rumor proves true, expect the sustainability and environment to play an important rule in tomorrow’s “Wonderlust” iPhone 15 unveiling.

Apple could ditch its silicone accessories

“The discontinuation of silicone accessories is not expected to be imminent, instead taking place via a more gradual transition whereby existing models are not refreshed with new color options,” the site notes.

“The Sport Band may not be refreshed with new color options following the launch of the Apple Watch Series 9, being available until supplies of the current units run out.”

It’s not just silicone

Recently, several rumors have popped up suggesting that the Cupertino company won’t release natural leather cases for the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup, as well as the Apple Watch Series 9 and the next Apple Watch Ultra.

Instead, it’s thought to use vegan materials and other eco-friendly variants, with one leaked image suggesting Apple could brand the new material “FineWoven.”

This is starting to look like a broader company-wide shift away from natural leather, silicone rubber, fluoroelastomer and similar eco-unfriendly materials.

A new magnetic band for the Apple Watch

Apple’s stainless steel Link Bracelet and leather Modern Buckle bands are sold out on its online store. The Hermès bands are also sold out on both Apple’s online store and the Hermès online store. Apple usually clears the stock of products that are about to be refreshed or discontinued.

Among other things, Apple might announce a new $99 strap for the Apple Watch during the event that should use eco-friendly materials and a magnetic clasp design.
