CCAdsBeGone uses the powerful hosts file method to hide ads from apps

iOS developer 0xkuj is out this week with a new jailbreak tweak called CCAdsBeGone that attempts to limit the number of ads you see when using apps on your jailbroken iPhone or iPad.

CCAdsBeGone

Once installed, CCAdsBeGone adds a new toggle to the Control Center interface so that you can toggle ad blocking on or off on demand, helping you to enjoy a nuisance-free experience more often.

You will need to enable the Control Center toggle from the Control Center preference pane in the Settings app post-installation in order to utilize it.

In case you were wondering, CCAdsBeGone utilizes the tried and true hosts file customization method to block known ad-serving domains. In doing so, you aren’t weighed down by additional software running on your device that would otherwise have a parasitic drain on performance.

The hosts file method is a powerful way to block ads system-wide, even in apps. That said, it’s not just a web browser ad-blocker; it also works in apps. If you find that you’re having issues connecting to certain apps or website post-installation, then it could be because you’re blocking too many things in the hosts file.

One thing worth noting is that CCAdsBeGone comes with its own hosts file, but if you aren’t satisfied with how it works, then you can always modify or replace the hosts file yourself and it will still be compatible with CCAdsBeGone.

Once installed, users will find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app where they can tinker with a few options to their liking. Things you can do there include:

  • Choosing your own user-made hosts file if the one provided doesn’t work well for you
  • Switching back to the default hosts file from the CCAdsBeGone tweak
  • Switching back to the system hosts file that doesn’t block any ads

If you’re interested in giving CCAdsBeGone a try for yourself, then you can purchase a copy for $1.99 from Gumroad. There are two separate packages available for rootful and rootless jailbreaks, so be sure to select the correct one for you.

As noted by the developer in the tweak depiction page, CCAdsBeGone works with jailbreaks on iOS & iPadOS 13, 14, 15, and 16, but there appears to be an issue on palera1n. You will need the LetMeBlock dependency from PoomSmart’s repository if you don’t already have it, the URL for which can be found below:
