  • What’s happening? For some, using the camera on the latest iPhones in third-party apps results in unexpected behavior, leaving them with shaky video. Aside from vibrating uncontrollably, the camera may also produce an eerie sound.
  • Why care? Because you want your iPhone camera to work properly in apps.
  • What to do? Stop using the camera in third-party apps until the issues are resolved to avoid permanent damage to the camera subsystem.

iPhone 14 Pro users report camera problems

Apple last Friday launched the latest iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro devices, and already some early adopters have reported interesting teething issues. Affected customers took to online forums such as Reddit to vent their frustration.

People report strange camera behavior which appears to be indicative of a hardware error, like the camera shaking and producing vibrations when shooting video.

No one likes shaky footage but that’s not the end of the iPhone 14 Pros camera woes. For some, the camera won’t focus in apps and yet others report hearing an unnerving mechanical noise when using the camera in third-party apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. Interestingly, Apple’s own Camera app is unaffected which means this is a software bug after all rather than a case of faulty hardware requiring a recall.

A fix is coming

The issue doesn’t seem to be reproducible on non-Pro devices. According to a statement an Apple spokesperson gave to The Verge, the camera issues plaguing iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be addressed in an iOS software update set to come next week, likely iOS 16.0.2.

The issue got press time after YouTuber Luke Miani on Twitter showed his iPhone camera vibrating and making a strange rattling sound when capturing footage.

It wasn’t until Damian Munoz’s TikTok shared a video of the violent camera shake that people began demanding answers. The noise apparently comes from the lens.

Speculating, it could have something to do with the device’s image stabilization hardware not performing according to specifications.

At any rate, don’t use the camera in third-party apps until Apple fixes this apparent software bug or you may risk permanently damaging the camera system.
