$4/month Snapchat+ subscription unlocks a few perks, keeps the ads coming

The newly-launched Snapchat+ subscription, priced at $4/month, unlocks a few exclusive and early-access features but it won’t remove pesky ads from the platform.

What is Snapchat Plus? How much does it cost?

Snapchat+ is Snap’s first subscription for the Snapchat app. Introduced on June 29, 2022, Snapchat+ costs four bucks per month and includes several perks. For starters, Snapchat+ includes exclusive features in the Snapchat app and early access to new public features. Some of the features that this subscription provides include perks seen elsewhere, such as the ability to change the style of the app’s icon on your iPhone’s home screen. A subscription will also be required to see who re-watched your story. The same goes for pinning a contact to the top of your chat history. Read: How to change your user and display name on Snapchat

How to subscribe to Snapchat Plus?

To get started with Snapchat+, update your copy of the Snapchat app installed on your device to the latest version [App Store link]. Now open the updated app, and hit Snapchat+ on your Snapchat profile to get started. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish subscribing to Snapchat+. According to the announcement in the Snap Newsroom, Snapchat+ will enable Snap to provide prioritized support to its members (read: Snap’s support teams will prioritize paying customers).

Where is Snapchat+ available?

Snapchat+ will start rolling out later this week in these countries:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

Snapchat+ will expand to more countries “over time.”

Does that mean the Snapchat app is no longer free?

On top of that, Snapchat+ will give subscribers access to experimental and prerelease features. Snapchat+ is an optional offering: You can continue using the Snapchat app as you normally would, without paying anything. Snapchat+ is basically for “the people who spend most of their time communicating with their closest friends on Snap,” the company’s Senior Vice President of Product, Jacob Andreou, tells The Verge. Snap has ensured that future features that rely on interactions with others will be exempt from the subscription. In other words, Snap will release any such features to the whole user base at no charge.

Does Snapchat+ remove ads?

In a word, no. Unfortunately, Snap has made the decision that it would continue monetizing all users regardless of whether they’re using the app for free or are subscribed to Snapchat+. In fact, Snap has clarified that ads are going to be at the core of its business model for the long term.

Is Snapchat+ worth the price?

Snap hasn’t listed all the perks included in Snapchat+. It goes without saying that iDB will be making sure to let you know once this information becomes available. Until then, it’s difficult to recommend this subscription unless you’re the type of person who likes living on the bleeding edge of technology. People universally hate online ads so it’s disappointing that Snap hasn’t included an ad-free experience in the mix. As The Verge put it, Snapchat+ is mostly “a cosmetic upgrade.”
