NotRecording prevents apps from being able to discern when you record your display

The iPhone and iPad each come standard with native screen recording capabilities, which is essentially a means of capturing activity on your display for someone else to see on their own device as a video file.

Unfortunately, not all apps permit screen recordings, and that’s something that iOS developer opa334 set out to change with a free jailbreak tweak release dubbed NotRecording.

To learn more about NotRecording, we spoke directly to opa334 and learned that the NotRecording tweak was created as a direct response to a tweak bounty published some time ago on Reddit.

We also learned about some of the possible applications of the tweak, as apps like Snapchat will either prevent you from recording your screen or share with the other person that you’ve done so.

What NotRecording does is trick that app into being unable to discern that you’re recording your screen, and it does so by spoofing the screen recording state that apps use to detect it.

One caveat to this is that NotRecording doesn’t bypass FairPlay DRM, which means it can’t bypass screen recording descriptions in apps such as Netflix that totally prevent screen recording efforts in the first place.

Once installed, NotRecording adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app where users can toggle the tweak on demand and enable or disable the tweak on a per-app basis:

It’s important to respring your device after making changes, and the developer wanted us to underscore the importance of enabling the app you want to use NotRecording with, because apps don’t come enabled by default.

While I’m not personally well-versed on types of apps that detect when you record your screen and share it with others, I do know this to be a fact in the Snapchat app. opa334 says that NotRecording will work in Snapchat, but warns that it could stop working at any time and that it may be grounds for disciplinary action for the offending account — you have been warned.

But if Snapchat isn’t your primary goal with spoofing the screen recording state, as suggested by the tweak bounty post. Then NotRecording might be worth taking a look at.

NotRecording is available as a free download from opa334’s personal repository via any package manager app and supports jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 13 and 14 devices.
