Apple said to be working on Studio Display with 7K resolution and Apple silicon

Before the end of 2019, Apple launched the Pro Display XDR. It’s a high-end standalone screen that’s designed for professionals. And, as such, it’s also equipped with a pretty high price tag. But, since then, the company has gone relatively quiet on a successor. That may change soon.

9to5Mac has the report today, which says Apple is working on an “Apple Studio Display”. The report is based on unnamed sources familiar with Apple’s plans, but, of course, take it with a grain of salt at this point. Nothing is official, is all. However, with a March event scheduled for next week, it’s possible we could see the company make some waves with a brand new standalone display.

The Studio Display is said to feature a 7K resolution, which would be a noteworthy bump from the 6K screen in the Pro Display XDR. However, the original report doesn’t say what Apple’s plans are regarding a potential replacement of the Pro Display XDR. Which means this new Studio Display might just be another option, while the Pro Display XDR remains as a lower-cost alternative.

What’s more, we don’t know how big the Studio Display will be, or just how much it will cost. The Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999 for just the standard display, but can jump up to $5,999 if a customer opts for the Nano-texture glass. The Pro Stand costs an additional $999, for what it’s worth.

There have been rumors regarding another external display from Apple being in the works for quite some time now. Some rumors have suggested it would be a less expensive model when compared to the Pro Display XDR, though, featuring lower resolution and other tweaks.

Oh, and one more thing: This new Studio Display is said to feature Apple silicon under the hood, too.

No word on when we can expect to see or hear more about the Studio Display, but it could certainly be sometime this year.
