Apple TV+ drama ‘The Mosquito Coast’ renewed for a second season

Despite the fact that many of Apple’s first series for Apple TV+ have picked up seasons beyond their first, nothing is a given. Even for a fledgling service looking for content. So a renewal is a big deal, especially when it comes to a critically-acclaimed show.

That’s the case today, with Apple TV+ officially renewing the well-received The Mosquito Coast for a second season. It’s not the quickest of turnarounds for a new season and a renewal, but the series itself only debuted on Apple’s video streaming service on April 30 of this year. And now there’s another season to look forward to.

It’s good timing, though, especially for fans of the first season. The initial season is set to come to an end on Friday, June 4.

Apple’s head of programming at Apple TV+, Matt Cherniss, had this to say on the renewal:

‘The Mosquito Coast’ has captured the imagination of viewers all over the world, not only because of its adrenaline-fueled action and adventure, but also for the engaging family story and captivating performances at its heart. We can’t wait to find out what comes next for the Fox family, and for audiences to continue to experience the thrill ride.

The original novel of the same name, written by Paul Theroux, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It’s billed as a major character drama, and that’s something that the series creator, Neil Cross, definitely brought to the small screen. The Mosquito Coast for Apple TV+ is typically praised for the standout performances by the show’s stars, Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish, and Gabriel Bateman.

Here’s how Apple describes the series:

A brilliant rebel (Justin Theroux) and his wife (Melissa George) take their family on the run to protect them, but end up exposing them to more danger than ever. At every turn of their adventure, they encounter increasing threats and intensifying moral choices from which there’s no turning back.

The first season of the hit drama is seven episodes in length. There’s no word on when production on the second season will start, or when it will premiere on Apple TV+. All of that will come in due time, sometime later this year, probably.

Here’s the official trailer for the first season:

(Unrelated, mostly, but Apple TV+ still hasn’t renewed Little Voice, starring Brittany O’Grady, Kevin Valdez, and Sean Teale. That show had a solid first season, but it doesn’t look like Apple’s going to bring it back for a second. That’s unfortunate.)

Did you check out the first season? Are you looking forward to the season finale later this week? Will you be watching the second season of The Mosquito Coast when it premieres in the future?
