How to set up and play Spotify on Alexa

Learn how to listen to Spotify using Alexa on your Amazon smart speaker. We’ll also show you how to make it the default music service so you don’t have to say “on Spotify” in every voice command.

Amazon Alexa Linked to Spotify

If you enjoy listening to music on your devices, then you may have more than one app for it.

Apple Music is a terrific choice. But if Spotify is your main app, you can easily link it with Alexa to use it on your Echo speaker using the official Spotify skill.

Note that you can link Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other services and use them all with Alexa. Just remember to say the app name, like “on Apple Music” or “on Spotify,” at the end of your voice command.

If you do not see this, log in to your Spotify account when prompted and accept the terms and conditions if you agree. You’ll see a confirmation that your Spotify account was successfully linked.

You may now see an option to choose a default music service. You can tap View Music Settings and select Spotify as your default. Or tap Not Now to ignore this for now. You can always go back to Alexa settings and select a default music service.

Use Spotify as your default music app

If you want Spotify to be your default music player on Alexa, this is a quick adjustment. Once you set it as the default, you won’t have to say “on Spotify” in every voice command.

For instance, instead of saying, “Alexa, play Get Lucky by Daft Punk on Spotify,” you can just say, “Alexa, play Get Lucky by Daft Punk.” And since Spotify is the default music player, it will play on Spotify.

1) Open the Alexa app on your iPhone and tap More > Settings.

2) Tap Music & Podcasts under the Alexa Preferences screen.

3) Now, tap Family Default Services from the top. You can also change it just for you by selecting your name from the top.

4) Tap Change in the Music section and select Spotify.

Set Spotify as default music service for Alexa

You can also make Spotify your default for Arts and Genre Stations, as well as Podcasts, which are right beneath Music. As mentioned, by making Spotify your default, you won’t have to add “on Spotify” to each of your commands.

If you use an Amazon Echo with Alexa and just so happen to love Spotify for your music, then this is the ideal way to make listening to your tunes easy. What’s your favorite music app? Is it Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, or something different? Let us know what it is and why you like it the most!
