T-Mobile has supported the eSIM in the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR right out of the gate, but only for prepaid plans. That’s finally changing.
This week, T-Mobile has confirmed that it is (finally) expanding eSIM support in the iPhone XS lineup and the iPhone XR to postpaid plans. This marks the first time this has been officially supported by the Un-carrier, so if you’ve been waiting for this functionality to be supported beyond a prepaid plan, the time has finally come.
T-Mobile today announced expanded support for embedded SIM (eSIM), which is basically just a physical SIM card gone digital. Last year, the Un-carrier launched eSIM on prepaid plans, and starting August 28, customers can light up an eSIM with a T-Mobile postpaid plan — something Un-carrier customers have asked for – to open new ways of using an eSIM-equipped device by adding a second line on the same device.
T-Mobile’s announcement reiterates the benefits of an eSIM, like how an individual can use a single device to host a phone number for their personal phone number and their work number. It can also make international travel a bit easier, too.
The wireless network also launched a support document for the expansion. That includes the steps on how to activate:
- You’ll need to visit a T-Mobile retail store to activate a postpaid line on an eSIM. One of our Mobile Experts will check your device for eligibility and walk you through the setup process. Need help finding a store? Go to our T-Mobile store locator to find the store nearest you.
- If you already have T-Mobile postpaid service on your eSIM capable device using a physical SIM card and are looking to swap the service to an eSIM, you can either visit your local T-Mobile store or contact our Customer Care Experts for assistance.
- If you want to activate a new Prepaid account on your iPhone with eSIM, download and install the T-Mobile eSIM app.
This has been a long time coming.
