How to always use YouTube in Dark Mode

Find out how to use YouTube permanently in Dark Mode even when your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Mac, or PC is in Light Mode.

YouTube in Light and Dark Modes

By default, the YouTube app on iOS and Android, as well as the YouTube website in a computer browser, honors your device’s Dark Mode settings. So, if you put your phone or computer in Dark Mode, YouTube will also have Dark Mode.

Note that you may need to refresh the YouTube website or force quit and reopen the YouTube app if Dark Mode is not reflected. And even if that does not put YouTube in Dark Mode, make sure “Use device theme” is set in YouTube’s Dark Mode settings (steps below).

Additionally, YouTube lets you enable an internal setting that keeps it permanently in Dark Mode. This is helpful if you always want to use YouTube in Dark Mode, regardless of what mode your device is in.

Always use the YouTube app in Dark Mode

  1. Open the official YouTube app on your iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Tap You from the bottom.
  3. Tap the gear icon from the top right.
  4. Select General.
  5. Tap Appearance.
  6. Select the Dark theme option instead of ‘Light theme’ or ‘Use device theme.’

Use YouTube.com in Dark Mode

  1. Visit YouTube.com in Safari, Google Chrome, or another browser of choice, and make sure you’re logged in to your account.
  2. Click your profile icon from the top right.
  3. Select Appearance, followed by Dark theme.

Repeat the above steps, then select ‘Use device theme’ to restore the default appearance settings. Conversely, you can select ‘Light Mode’ to keep YouTube’s background white at all times.

Note: If you use some sort of third-party YouTube extension in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or another browser, check its settings to ensure the right appearance.
