Apple shares details about WWDC 2017 Scholarships

Worldwide Developers Conference will be returning to San Jose and Apple this morning shared details on Scholarships that reward talented students and STEM organization members with the opportunity to attend this year’s conference. Young developers selected for a scholarship will receive a free WWDC17 ticket and lodging. Submissions open March 27.

Submissions will be accepted from Monday, March 27 at 10am PDT until Sunday, April 2 at 5pm PDT. All applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, April 21, 2017.

To be eligible to apply for a WWDC Scholarship, developers must be 13 years of age or older, registered for free with Apple as a developer or a member of a paid Apple Developer Program and enrolled part-time or full-time in a course of study, or be a member or alumni of a STEM organization.

While eligibility has not changed from prior years, the application process has and now revolves around Swift Playgrounds, Apple’s iPad app aimed at teaching young developers and kids how to code.

Applicants are required to upload a visually interactive scene in a Swift Playground that can be experienced within three minutes. “If you need inspiration, start with templates in Swift Playgrounds for a head start on more advanced creations. Get inventive and make them your own by adding graphics, audio, and more,” according to Apple.

In addition to a Swift playground project, applicants must post a 500-word description about the features and technologies used in their project and write an essay on how they’ve considered sharing their “coding knowledge and enthusiasm for computer science with others.”

Submissions must follow all requirements in the official WWDC Scholarship Terms.

Applications will be judged on technical accomplishment, creativity of ideas and content of applicants’ written responses.

WWDC 2017 is scheduled to kick off with a keynote on June 5.

The five-day conference will be held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, the site of the original WWDC and located just minutes from the new Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, slated to open next month.

The conference will focus on all platforms—macOS, tvOS, watchOS and iOS—and will be live-streamed through the Apple Developer website and on the WWDC app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
