Potatoman Seeks the Troof: a retro twitch game for the highly skilled player

Potatoman Seeks the Troof 3

Games that test your reaction time can be both exciting and aggravating. If you are really good at precision timing and control, you can walk away from these twitch games with your head held high. If not, you might as well give up now.

Potatoman Seeks the Troof is one of those types of games that will either make you beam with pride or collapse on the floor, crying. Can you handle the challenge?

Players control what looks like a heavily pixelated naked man. However, based on the name of the game, I’ll assume he is some sort of potato being. You must run, jump, and avoid all manner of bouncing, dropping, and shooting obstacles as you explore a variety of two-dimensional lands.

Move Potatoman forward or backward by touching the tiny arrows at the bottom left side of the screen. Jump by tapping the right side of the screen. I found the tiny arrow controls to be both awkward and at times, unstable. You can adjust the location of the controls in the settings section, but I never found the perfect set up.

On the first level, you must avoid jumping cacti, outmaneuver a speeding bullet, and get as far away from a poisonous scorpion as possible. That’s the easiest part.

Along your quest to find the “troof” you will face rampaging trucks, jumping sharks, vicious bats, and geometric underworlds that seem like video game hell.

Players start the first level with seven lives. Each new level provides a different number of lives (most likely based on how difficult it is). If you use up all of your lives, which you probably will, you start over from the current level.

Throughout your journey, Potatoman will meet many beings that help him find what he is looking for, meaning to his existence. Characters will either provide sage advice, or try to dissuade Potatoman from continuing his pursuit.

This game is hard, very hard. I struggled with it for about a half hour and finally collapsed on the floor in shambles. It can be completed, but you’ll need better reaction time than me to get to the end. Good luck with that.

Potatoman Seeks the Troof is available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch for $1.99. Download it in the App Store today.
