Certify your English proficiency using Duolingo Test Center for iOS

The language certification industry commands some surprisingly insane fees so how about fair language certification for all?

Your prayers have been heard: the free learning platform Duolingo on Friday released an iOS app which allows anyone to certify their English proficiency right on their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

Not only can Duolingo Test Center certify your language skills right on an iOS device, but does so at a significant lower price, too.

And because there’s no need to travel long distances to examination facilities available only in select major cities, you can get certified in the comfort of your home, in under half an hour.

With unique test generation and remote proctoring, Duolingo Test Center is not a gimmick: the software uses a human proctor who verifies your identity and participation by monitoring your device’s camera and microphone.

Speaking of identity, the app asks you to pick a form of identification to photograph (driver’s license, passport or National/State ID card) and then photograph yourself using the iPhone’s camera for the final certificate.

Prices?

A $20 certification fee is imposed per each human-verified test. That’s a significantly lower price than similar tests, regularly priced at $250. “Even buying a new smartphone and taking the Duolingo test will provide a more financially viable option for most,” the firm argues.

Plus, Dueling is currently offering tests free of charge for a limited time. There’s no catch here: Duolingo scores correspond to scores on other English proficiency exams such as the TOEFL and the IELTS.

“Every year, over 30 million job seekers and students around the world are forced to take a test to prove that they know English or other languages in order to apply for a job or school,” the firm noted. “Offline tests can require paying an entire month’s salary, traveling to a distant examination facility, and then waiting weeks in limbo for the results.”

The 12-megabyte download supports any iPhone, iPod touch or iPad with iOS 7 or later.
