Not to be outdone by Google which just unveiled Inbox, “a completely different type of inbox” from the Gmail team, rival Yahoo on Wednesday pushed an update to its native Mail application for the iPhone and iPad.

The latest versions of Yahoo Mail adds notifications for your favorite news stories, travel/event alerts and other tidbits.

Yahoo Mail is available free in the App Store.

The new Yahoo Today view lists upcoming flight details, including directions to the airport, the ability to call the airline to rebook your flight or go directly to the airline website, as shown on the animated GIF below.

The app supports sharing of your flight and event details via email or text.

“And once you land at your destination, you’ll receive suggestions for the top restaurants and attractions in the area, with reviews and pictures from Yelp,” notes the Internet company.

You also get updates on flight status changes delivered in real-time. And like Google’s Inbox app, Yahoo Mail will show map directions for your upcoming events (Evite, Eventbrite and Ticketmaster events are currently supported).

If you’d rather stay on top of news, Yahoo has you covered as Mail now makes it easy to enable notifications for news headlines within in-app settings.

Catch 22: for the time being, these features are only available to users residing in the United States (you must be signed-in).

Yahoo Mail 3.2.8 changelog:

  • The Multi-talented Yahoo Mail app is now even smarter. Now in Yahoo Today, view your upcoming flight details plus get real time updates on flight status changes. Also, see upcoming events which you can map directions to and easily share with friends. Available in the US only.
  • Stay on top of the latest headlines with News notifications. Turn it on or off anytime under Settings. Available in the US only.
  • Performance improvements
  • Bug fixes

The app comes in at 35.8 megabytes and runs natively on any iPhone, iPod touch or iPad compatible with iOS 7.0 or later. Regrettably, Yahoo hasn’t optimized its email software yet for the bigger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus screens.
