Google updates Chrome for iOS with Cast support

Chrome iOS iPhone

Following a relatively quiet period when it comes to Chrome for iOS, Google is again demonstrating willingness to continue advancing its popular iPhone and iPad browser with useful new capabilities.

The new Google Chrome version 36.0.1985.49 is now available to download in the App Store, bringing out Cast support for websites that have implemented integration with Cast-enabled devices.

Furthermore, this edition also includes stability improvements and bug fixes and a slightly tweaked app icon for your Home screen…

Google does not specify how the Cast feature works on enabled websites.

Cast is Google’s AirPlay so Chrome for iOS can now send a compatible webpage to Apple TV-like Android devices which integrate with Cast technology, as per Google’s support doc.

Upon installing the new version, you’ll notice that Chrome’s Home screen icon has finally dropped the beveled edge at the bottom. I’ve always loathed such an odd design choice because it makes Google’s iOS apps look out of place in iOS 7.

Hopefully, this design tweak will gradually roll-over to Google’s other iPhone and iPad apps.

Release notes mention the following:

  • Allows mobile sites that have added Cast support to work with your Cast-enabled device.
  • Stability improvements and bug fixes.

Download Google Chrome free in the App Store.

The universal app requires iOS 6.0 or later.
