Square Enix Montreal announces upcoming title ‘Hitman: Sniper’

In April, Square Enix Montréal brought the popular stealth video game series Hitman to iOS with ‘Hitman Go.’ It was an odd release, in that it fell under the turn-based puzzler genre instead of action-adventure, but it still seemed to perform relatively well.

Folks who were hoping for a more traditional Hitman title, though, will be happy to hear that the Canadian firm has another one in the works. It’s called ‘Hitman: Sniper,’ and it’s a massively competitive sniping game with a focus on the subtlety of execution…

From the Hitman blog (via TouchArcade):

We’ve designed Hitman: Sniper to be a massively competitive sniping game that will focus on the subtlety of execution. You’ll need to have your wits about you to complete scenario-driven contracts that contain a number of targets and assignments. Each one is designed to have a high level of replayability, not only to fine-tune your approach but to explore creative alternatives and to achieve the ultimate score on the leaderboards. If you remember Hitman: Sniper Challenge, released by our friends at Io-Interactive ahead of the launch of Hitman Absolution, you’ll have a pretty good idea of the sort of action you can expect.

And here’s a short (really short) teaser trailer:

Square Enix says Hitman: Sniper will be a free-to-play title. While the ‘freemium’ model isn’t popular with gamers, the studio promises that the in-app purchases won’t hinder gameplay—think early access to contracts—and that they’ll monitor player feedback.

We’re not sure when the game is going to launch, other than ‘later this year,’ but we should hear more information at E3.
