Spotify is in advanced talks to acquire SoundCloud, reports the Financial Times. The streaming music service believes the buyout could help it better compete with competitors like Apple Music thanks to its large library of exclusive and user-created content.

Spotify, the music streaming service, is in advanced talks to acquire SoundCloud, as competition heats up with Apple for the future of digital music, according to people briefed on the discussions.

SoundCloud’s investors include Twitter, which invested in the online music platform this summer to encourage more social media influencers to use the messaging site, write Matthew Garrahan and Madhumita Murgia in London and James Fontanella-Khan in New York.

At its September 7 iPhone event, Apple announced that Apple Music—its 1-year old streaming music service—had hit 17m subscribers. Shortly after, Spotify said it hit 40m paid subscribers. It’s believed SoundCloud has upwards of 200 million registered users.

Don’t know how this would affect the music industry.. Once Spotify owns SoundCloud..I feel like a premium will be paid to listen to music the way we do today..

    RiP SoundCloud ⛪️⛪️⛪️

Please don’t. If artists let me listen to their music for free, I don’t want some big company messing with it.

You can still listen to artists for free in Spotify; to my knowledge no content is restricted to select subscriptions, though I could be wrong about this. I’ll say Spotify in Argentina is still extremely affordable (USD 4.5 per month) compared to other services and countries. It may be likely that if Spotify buys SoundCloud, they will want all SoundCloud users to migrate to Spotify, and with that, I would assume Spotify service will get even better, so cheer up. 🙂

Yeah but it’s more like, using spotify without premium sucks. I don’t want soundcloud to change, it just works how it does now.

      • Diego Milano

Yeah, I sort of had the same impression, that’s why I decided to use Premium, plus the sound quality. I never tried SoundCloud.
