KGI: 3D Touch-less iPad Air 3 due in H1 2016

iPad Air 2 touch id gold

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared some interesting predictions for 2016 iPhones and iPads in a note sent to clients this morning, a copy of which was obtained by MacRumors.

For starters, Kuo is adamant that the third-generation iPad Air will be arriving in the first half of next year. The tablet won’t be outfitted with a pressure-sensing screen due to alleged production issues related to building a 9.7-inch 3D Touch sensor array.

For the time being, 3D Touch remains “one of the most severe production bottlenecks in iPhone 6s supply chain,“ the analyst wrote.

As for Apple’s iPhone 7, Kuo expects the smartphone to arrive around the September timeframe with 3D Touch that should have “similar technology and structure” as the iPhone 6s.

Although fans were expecting the third-generation iPad Air at Apple’s fall event this year, the company instead unveiled the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and the fourth-generation iPad mini.

Truth be told, the current-generation iPad Air 2, which is now more than a year old, continues to benefit from the speedy A8X chip with two gigabytes of RAM, twice as much as the previous models.

iOS 9’s Split View and Slide Over multitasking modes work without a hiccup and most graphics-intensive games deliver console-grade graphics on the iPad Air 2.

Should Apple entice existing iPad Air 2 owners to upgrade to the iPad Air 3, it better offer a substantial speed increase and some compelling new hardware features. In its current form, the iPad Air 2 is more than capable of supporting existing App Store applications, games and iOS 9 features.

Ipad air 3 needs a higher res display. Its time. Give me a QHD display on an ipad and I’m sold. That would be a major selling point for me at least and probably others.

    • Liggerstuxin

No thanks. Im perfectly happy with the resolution. More pixels require more light to be pushed through the smaller pixels and more processing to power it. I’d be happy with a oled though, as long as it doesn’t sacrifice anything. Otherwise, all I need is and under the hood bump. It better not just be the iPad pro’s internals in an air. More battery would be nice too. It’s thin enough Apple…

QHD is 16:9. iPad screen is 4:3. But I get the point and I disagree. What the iPad needs is a more powerful software feature set to take advantage of the already fairly-powerful hardware. iOS 9 multi-tasking was a step in the right direction.

  • Andy

Give me 4GB of RAM, A10X chip, camera with f/2.2 aperture and 240 fps slo-mo, 5 megapixel front facing camera, improved Touch ID and I’ll be happy.

It’s definitely time to upgrade from the iPad Air.

    • Blip dude

Improved Touch ID?? Why?? The thing currently works as advertised. I personally hate the “improvements” on the 6S plus that almost no one asked for.

      • rockdude094

what being too fast is a problem 😐

      • Blip dude

Yes, it is a problem. Besides, isn’t it already fast enough as it is?? Are people that impatient?? I can’t even do something as simple as read a notification or quickly change a song because of how fast this thing. You mean to tell me you actually have a problem that it takes a mere moment for Touch ID to kick in??

      • rockdude094

Well use the sleep/wake button then. I like fast entry into my phone always.

      • Blip dude

Uhh, why can’t use just wait an extra second for the phone to unlock?? Why should I have to result to using the sleep/wake button, out of all the buttons that can easily get stuck to unlock the phone just because a few people are too impatient with their phone?? Nobody had a problem with waking up their phone with home button before so why start now?? Why have faster input when virtually no one had a problem to begin with in the first place??

      • rockdude094

well you could have just bought an iPhone 6 instead… besides i wouldn’t blame you for the fact that apple’s lack of software customization is a root cause of all the problems with the iPhone not the hardware itself.

      • Liggerstuxin

Some people want a pre powerful pocket computer than you do. That’s all.

      • Mohammed Sahib

A software option to set the delay of touch ID would be nice. Personally I expect it will be implemented in iOS 10.

    • Bugs Bunnay

      Apple employees laugh at this.

  • Martin 

I have an iPad Air 2 and only thing that needs to be upgraded is battery life. I can live without 3D Touch (although I will have iPhone 6s Plus in 1week so will see if it’s so great) speed is really good and screen resolution it’s enough to use it comfy

  • Guy

4gb of ram and maybe Apple Pencil for iPad Air 3 I’m sold.
iPad Pro just to big to carry around.
I always forget I have 3d touch on my iPhone 6s plus. So it useless for me.

  • DOOManiac

A new iPhone in September that doesn’t lose features from the current iPhone? This guy sure is a genius.

  • It will release with 3D Touch otherwise upgraders won’t feel any reason to upgrade. If it’s similar to the Air 2 it might even accelerate previous iPads sales. The 4K display alone won’t cut it.

    • Blip dude

4K display?? That’s actually a reason for me NOT to upgrade. Give me 4GB of RAM and I’m sold. I barely use 3D Touch myself personally so that won’t justify it for me.

    • rockdude094

Not mention that it would allow developers to build 3D touch factuality for the iPad as well for the future releases

  • Elias Chao

I don’t know why but I think it’s not going to be an awesome improvement over the iPad Air 2 (which is awesome), but it’s going to be compatible with the pencil. That would seem very Apple fashion.

  • Romi

give me Pencil support and I’m sold.

  • Gregg

Christian Ziberg: “Should Apple entice existing iPad Air 2 owners to upgrade to the iPad Air 3, it better offer a substantial speed increase and some compelling new hardware features.”

Me: “Yes, Apple! You’d better offer this and that, or else…”

    Apple: “Yeah? Or else what?”

Me: “ok…” *slowly extends hand with Apple Pay*

  • iPhoneWINS

lol @ a new device with less features

  • Richmond Ong

    iPad Air 3

    4GB ram and A10x

    that would do

  • Marketing must be strong for this “small” upgrade.
