Pangu for Mac preparing environment

The Pangu Team released their Pangu utility for Mac earlier today, so Mac users who were waiting for compatibility with their operating system have no excuse to not jailbreak any longer.

In this post, we will show you how to use Pangu for Mac to jailbreak iOS 8.1. This post was created for an iPhone, but note that the steps are exactly identical, no matter what device you want to jailbreak (ie. an iPad or iPod touch). Likewise, any iOS 8 firmware version can be jailbroken using this tool, including iOS 8, and iOS 8.0.2.

Jailbreak iOS 8.1 on Mac

Pre-requisite: to avoid potential issues, it is recommended that you restore your iPhone using iTunes prior to jailbreaking, if you had previously updated to iOS 8.1 over the air. If you had already updated to iOS 8.1 via iTunes, then you’re good to go. Also make sure you backup your device before jailbreaking. In case something goes wrong, you’ll still be able to restore from backup.

Step 1: Download Pangu for Mac.

Step 2: Double click on the DMG file to extract the Pangu8 app, and save it to your desktop.

Step 3: Right click on the Pangu8 app and choose Open.

Step 4: Plug your iPhone in your Mac via the USB cable.

Step 5: Following the instructions on the Pangu8 app, unlock your iPhone and select “Trust.” Pangu will then detect your device model and firmware version.

Step 6: Click the Start Jailbreak button. Pangu will then display three different warnings, as you can see on the screenshot below. Make sure you read and understand everything here, and make sure you put your iPhone in Airplane Mode, then click Already Did.

Step 7: Pangu will then go through the jailbreak process, which might take some time, so be a little patient. You might be asked to turn off Find My iPhone during the process. If that’s the case, just turn it off.

Step 8: At some point, your iPhone screen will show a Slide to Upgrade slider. Just slide and let Pangu continue.

Step 9: Your iPhone will reboot, and once it boots up again, you should have the Pangu and Cydia apps on your Home screen.

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iOS device. Next step is finding some great tweaks to install.

If the Pangu app just closes on its own and leaves a blank Pangu icon on your iPhone Home screen, keep your device plugged in, launch Pangu again, and start over.

Finally made the plunge for my iPhone 6 after waiting a few weeks from the initial Pangu release. Any others waiting around, make the jump now before 8.1.1 hits!

  • Sunny

Does anyone else care that there is no October and 2 Aprils after 2038? In iOS calendar on 8.1

    • Chris

That year is going to be painful, I hate reliving 1 day let alone 3 months.

  • Jatin

I unplugged my device because of blank pangu icon and deleted than blank icon now I have to restore my device or just plug it back in and jailbreak it again?

    • Edvard Rølvaag

      I do think so, yes.

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

Do not unplug your device just jaillbreak again

  • Lhu

most of jailbreak tweaks are not compatible, aren’t they?

    • guytje1717 .

      I jailbreaked the Ipad air2 from stock install and everything worked;
Went to Cydia and installed 3 tweaks, unfortunatelly one wasn’t compatible (I missed that). Then I got Safe mode after Safe mode even after uninstalling the 3 tweaks. To make things worse, when rebooting, I got a red screen and the the Apple logo was stuck. I was lucky to restore it with DFU mode.

I’m returning it to Apple (two weeks time to return if not satisfied) because I hate the vibrating when watching Youtube, sometimes it makes clicking/popping sounds in the speaker for no reason, it freezes completely and you have to reboot (had this 4 times in about 5 days of use) and in Safari touch is sometimes not responsif.
All of this without a jailbreak.
I know that most of these problems can or will be fixed with a software update (except the vibrating) but then it will be too late for JB and if i was on a JB i couldn’t update software.
So, I’m staying with my perfectly working Ipad4 JB Ios 7.1.2

Too bad, because i liked the weight and screen ant reflection of the Air2

    Can someone help me?

My battery is dropping 10% in LESS than half an hour. 5s 8.1
I uninstalled ALL my tweaks and I still don’t know what’s making it drop every 2-3 minutes.
This is so frustrating, I don’t know what’s making me lose so much battery.

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

Make twice calibration battery, full charge, let your iPhone complitly dropp battery then charge for at least 3 hours

  • Nick

is there any way to save SHSH blobs on iPhone 6+ iOS 8.1?

PLEASE HELP! I’m stuck at rebooting after I tried installing Alkaline on my iOS 8.1, jailbroken iPhone 5s. The download of Alkaline freezed, so I tried to reboot and now I’m stuck at an endless reboot! Any suggestions?

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

Hold home and sleep button until you see ,,plug to itunes” then click on upgrade

      • Edvard Rølvaag

ok, thx. i’ll try it out now…

      • Edvard Rølvaag

I just restored with iTunes. It’s ok now, but thx anyway 🙂

  • Soupi

I am currently on 7.0.4 (JailBroken) I want to upgrade to 8.1 AND jailbreak my device again.

Would I have to remove my old jailbreak first then upgrade to 8.1 then apply the PANGU Jail BREAK?

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

Only you need to click on restore not upgrade in itunes when you plug your iPhone, after pangu for 8.x.x

    • Edvard Rølvaag

I suggest that you do a restore to iOS 8.1 through iTunes (after backed up of course) and then jailbreak 😉

      • Soupi

would I have to remove my current jailbreak first?

      • Mohamad

        yes you do. unfortunately.

      • Soupi

        How would i remove it?

      • Edvard Rølvaag

If you want to remove a jailbreak, the only way to do so is to do a restore to factory settings (I believe). That means, if you want to jailbreak with Pangu on iOS 8.1, you have to do a restore to factory settings in iTunes and than jailbreak.

      • Soupi

how will i get my music and pictures back on my phone?

      • Samuel

        Restore from backup 🙂

  • hermantf

In case anyone is wondering, I just did this on iPhone 5. I was coming from jailbroken iPhone 5 on iOS 7.1. Amazingly, my iPhone 5 is now FASTER and SMOOTHER on jailbroken iOS 8. Very pleased!

    • Soupi

can you post the steps you took to backup your phone then unjail break it then rejailbreak it with pangu

      • hermantf

I plugged it into my mac. Launched iTunes. Backed everything up. Installed iOS 8.1 (that “unjailbreaks”it). Ran pangu according to the directions. That’s it!

  • Josh H

if i ordered my 6+ from verizon today do you think it will ship with 8.1 or will it ship with an earlier version?

  • InfiniteMischief

Just jailbroken my 5s. Cydia is acting strange, I did a search for bitesms, action menu activator etc… And nothing comes up. Anybody have any ideas? A couple of more things, when I jailbroke the phone I lost like 3gigs of space. Is that common? When I looked around I notice cydia loaded up a lot of stuff… gzip bzip2, diff utilities, and so on…lot of programs that I never noticed on the other jailbreaks.but then again I wasnt looking. Just want to know if this is normal. Took a screen shot of some of the programs I found pre installed. I know cydia comes with stuff just never noticed all of these programs thanks for your help!

  • Ryan Sinacore

  • aizathisyam

I noticed that my free space on my mac is decreasing quite a lot while I’m running the pangu jailbreak… The same thing also happened when i tried on a pc running windows… I dont think it is caused by itunes backup as i have checked in the directory, there’s no backup files for my ios device… What could have caused this to happen?

  • Samuel

  • Delfos Sambucetti Arturaola

I guys stay away from this jailbreak I have been reading ton of commits and what I hear is not very good seems very unstable!!! I love having a jailbroken phone but not like this!!! I will keep waiting for somthing more stable thats if it even comes out or updated!!!

    • Hvahrt

Good thought! ruined a 3 month old phone here

      • Delfos Sambucetti Arturaola

Man sorry to hear that but I have been warning people not to jailbreak just yet it’s very unstable on an os that was rushed out not a good mix.

  • do I have to do a fresh restore or can I jailbreak it with all my stuff on it as long as its in airplane mode and passcode and find my iPhone is turned off??

  • Timmy D

I’ve been successfully jail breaking my devices since ios3 or 4. I am only interested in breaking my iPad Air and downloaded the jb directly from Pangu. When I open it, with no device on it, it detects an iPhone 4. When I follow directions and plug in my device it still tells me to turn off Find My iPhone–that feature IS turned off on my iPad and it is in Airplane mode. I have downloaded same file 4 times with same results every time. Perhaps I should add I have a mac and am using the jb for mac. Anyone else having issues with this? Any ideas how to fix? Thanks

  • Hvahrt

well this sucks.Ruined my phone! Is that possible? Cannot reboot cannot turn off Itunes will not respond! Bang goes $700

    • Timmy D

Ruined how? Usually even if you mess up you can connect thru iTunes and restore to new.

      • Hvahrt

Phone is stuck on the white screen and will not do any thing even when connected to I tunes

      • Timmy D

Hold down home and power buttons for about 10 seconds. Should allow reboot. Screen should go black. Last resort would be to let power run down until phone dies then plug in. Usually if all else fails that works.

      • Hvahrt

Done the power down thing.Still the same I will leave it to drain lets see what happens. Thanks

      • Delfos Sambucetti Arturaola

What you need to do is put your phone in DFU mode then connect it to iTunes to restore.

      • Hvahrt

        What is DFU mode?

      • Austin

I’m not sure exactly what it is you hold the power button for ten seconds then hold the home button (Google it just to make sure I haven’t forgot). You should get a black screen with iTunes logo. Just connect it and restore

  • Timmy D

I have iPad Air running 8.1. Downloaded Pangu for Mac. Followed directions but no good. With no device connected, Pangu senses iPhone4 every time. WIth device connected, same. Have been jail breaking since Spirit (3.2). Don’t know how to get Pangu to recognize my device. Really don’t want to do the Windows on Mac thing. That’s why I have waited. Help please!
