OS X Yosemite (dark mode, Hamza Sood 001)

Apple today opened the floodgate by posting the public beta of its upcoming OS X 10.10 Yosemite software, which launches officially sometime this Fall, and already a bunch of people took to Twitter over an error message saying the redemption code has already been used.

Each copy of Yosemite beta requires a promotional code which must be redeemed in the Mac App Store to download the installer. Is there anything you can do about this error message?

Yes, there is – and a remedy couldn’t be simpler. Read on…

First, let’s briefly recap the process of getting your Yosemite redemption code and downloading the installer form the Mac App Store.

How to redeem and download OS X Yosemite Beta.

Step 1: First, visit the OS X Beta Program webpage using Safari on your Mac and click the ‘Sign In’ link in the upper right.

Step 2: The next step is to enter your Apple ID username and password. It must be the same Apple ID that you’ve used to sign up for the OS X Beta Program in the first place. After entering your credentials, click the blue ‘Sign In’ button to proceed.

Step 3: You’ll be greeted with a splash page welcoming you to the beta program and offering a few tidbits related to the public Yosemite beta. Now follow the ‘Get Yosemite’ link in the upper right.

Step 4: You’ll be taken to a new section of the website offering useful information pertaining to OS X Yosemite Beta system requirements (you’ll need a Mac with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of available disk space and OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later), backing up your Mac and installing Yosemite Beta.

Step 5: Scroll all the way down to the ‘Download and install OS X Yosemite Beta’ section – there’s your redemption code right there. Tick the I have read the above and understand the limitations of using this beta software’ box and click the blue ‘Download OS X Yosemite Beta’ button.

Step 6: The Mac App Store will automatically launch. At this point, you may be asked to provide your Apple ID username and password. Just type in your credentials and hit the ‘Sign In’ button to proceed.

Step 7: You’ll be taken to the Redeem screen, with your Yosemite redemption code already entered for you. Click the ‘Redeem’ button to proceed.

Step 8: Unless there’s some hiccup with the code, the store should tell you that it’s successfully redeemed the code and start downloading the installer. Once the download finishes, the installer will launch automatically, at which point you’ll need to follow a few simple on-screen instructions to install Yosemite Beta on your Mac.

Step 9: To check the progress of your download, use the Purchased tab of the Mac App Store. As you can see for yourself, the installer is over five gigabytes so you may want to grab yourself lunch, depending on the speed of your broadband Internet connection.

OS X Yosemite Public beta (step 8)

Not everyone has had a hassle-free experience downloading the installer. Some people are reporting seeing a “the code has already been redeemed” error message. If you’re still having trouble, here’s your fix.

How to fix unredeemable Yosemite beta code

The solution couldn’t be simpler.

Simply visit the OS X Beta Program webpage again and head over to the ‘Get Yosemite’ section. This will create a new redemption code that you can use in the Mac App Store to grab the installer.

In fact, simply reloading this webpage will create a brand new redemption code every time so use this technique to recreate redemption codes until one works. Some folks are reporting there’s something amiss with their Yosemite installer whereas it’s simply taking a long time to download so don’t forget to check the Purchased tab in the Mac App Store.

Once downloaded, the installer goes straight to your Mac’s Applications folder.

Should you plan on deploying Yosemite Beta on multiple machines, it may be prudent to copy the installer as soon as it finishes downloading. Just create a copy on a USB thumb drive, or store it to an external disk, network-attached storage or elsewhere.

Known Yosemite beta issues:

  • Safari
    • Safari may hang when playing certain Netflix content.
  • iPhoto and Aperture
    • iPhoto 9.5.1 and Aperture 3.5.1 are required on OS X Yosemite. Update to these versions from the Mac App Store.
    • When entering edit mode in iPhoto, a black screen may be displayed instead of the selected photo.
    • Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing may not function properly when both iPhoto and Aperture are installed.
  • iCloud
    • The shared purchase history page on the Mac App Store is disabled for Family Sharing accounts.
    • iCloud Drive may appear empty in the Finder after first time setup. Restart to resolve this problem.
  • AirDrop
    • AirDrop may not show nearby Macs.
    • Sending files to another Mac using AirDrop may not work.

Keep in mind that the installer is tied to your Apple ID so it can only be used on Macs that are signed in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID.

If you ran into the issue with your redemption code, let us know down in the comments if creating another code did the trick for you.

I’m wondering still Apple didnt got first 1 million sign ups? Instead of vast user base?

    • Tarek

maybe none interested in the public beta if they installed a copy from the first place

    • Guilherme

My friend has just signed up to the beta and could download it!

“iPhoto 9.5.1 and Aperture 3.5.1 are required on OS X Yosemite.”

Sooo basically if I don’t have Aperture I can’t install Yosemite?? This sucks!

    • roygelbart

No. It’s saying if you have an older version of Aperture you must update it to 3.5.1 to use it on OSX 10.10 Yosemite.

      • Foellarbear

Alright thanks. Seems like Apple wasn’t very specific when explaining the exact requirements.

    • CA

I don’t have Aperture installed. I’m sure they mean if you have an older version installed to update it…

  • Reloading the page worked for me earlier today. It took me several tries but it worked.

    • Chris Gilmore

How can I fresh install this beta? Like starting new on my Macbook.

  • Andre Grey

i said Thank you and my comment was deleted.. wow

  • Abdl

Why is Apple addressing people with “Known Issues” instead of just fixing them before the release? :/

  • Ali Abbass

Not working. Still the same code every time

    • solai

check in download section and try to click download every time if it fails

  • Blip dude

My issue is the fact that Yosemite won’t download after a certain percentage.

  • Kenneth

Another issue ive noticed for me is that facetime crashes when you go full screen while in call.

  • Gary LE

Keep getting “an error has occurred” then stopped downloading

  • Quitting and reopening the App Store seemed to do the trick for me – look under purchases. Should be at the top.

    • Mehdi Yasaee

      Thanks, that was my problem.

  • Waiting is better 🙂

  • After reaching like 200 Mb of beta download, the AppStore gives me error and I have to retry whole process again…

Did restarted 3-4 times and problem persists. Help required!

    • Marcus Winchester

      Servers under heavy load

  • tallpinetree

Refreshing the page still gives me the same redemption code. Even in multiple browsers and after tossing the cache and cookies, and a full restart of the Mac. I think the code is tied to ones Apple ID, since we’re required to sign in before they reveal the redemption code.

One other note: in the Purchases section of the App Store app, the re-install attempts always start back at zero. It doesn’t remember if it’s downloaded 600mg already. Starts at zero every time.

I’ll try again later this evening, it may be just the huge number of people trying to download the beta now.

    • Same happening with me…

    • tallpinetree

Success. I waited until midnight last night and started the download again. Woke to the complete Yosemite beta ready to be installed.

  • Andy

The problem i have is having the download failing one third through the way.. I’ve trying quitting the App store a number of times but doesn’t seems to work.

Not sure if it’s because too many people are downloading it at the same time.

  • Foellarbear

It won’t download… it just hangs up. The white bar is full and in the Mac store it says that it is downloaded. what is going on?

    • Marcus Winchester

What Mac are you using and what build of Mavericks are you on. They recommend you be on the latest version 10.9.4

      • Foellarbear

I was able to get Yosemite up and running yesterday. Thanks though!

  • cdbriggs

I have been trying to get the beta to work for a few hours. It downloads a little over a gig of it, and then goes back to zero and starts again. Any idea how to fix this? Is there any way to download without the app store? I tried getting an updated redemption code as well, and it would not update when I refreshed.

    • Marcus Winchester

Just be patient, remember, almost a million people got in on the beta so the servers will be naturally under heavy load. I got in early here in the UK at around 6PM GMT and didn’t have a single issue.

  • lethienhoang

Why can’t i download yosemite? dowloading for 120mb that show is error “cant downloading…”

  • Bryan Tracy

Thanks very much! My download was just paused, but i did not know about checking App Store tabs – thx! again bryan tracy, Oakland

  • Arsanny Lintang

every time I download the beta, “An error has occurred.” popped out. Anyone having the same problem? or the server just over-loaded?

    • Arthur Zheng

I think the servers were overloaded,I installed this beta on my iMac Late 2009 and it had no issues, but the beta itself is a different story and all I can say is that either it’s just me having the issues that I have the experiencing or Apple better update the beta.

  • FarmerBobThe1st

Nope. Your code fix does not work.I’ve got it all ready to DL in the app store. It seems that once you sign in with the first code you get is it. No matter what you do. I just can’t get it to download. It starts, then about 500MB it starts over or I get an error.

  • greg

I couldn’t get the code to reload with a new number (when using the instructions above), but then I looked under the Purchases tab in the App Store app, and there was Yosemite Beta 1 waiting to be downloaded !!

  • abdullah575

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

  • alan brooks

finally got it to down load use my wifes id

  • Arthur Zheng

This beta better be updated,my iMac Late 2009 has a flashing wallpaper (from default to black and again) and I have no access to the dock whatsoever!

  • Allison Childs

It isn’t generating a new code, just the same one.

  • Juan Sebatián Páramo

There is a program I use all the time, Diogenes (software of ancient greek). But this software doesn’t launch on Yosemite, although It works properly on Mavericks. Why is it happening? What can I do?

  • GlynT

Just got my Mac a few days ago. Every time I try to refresh the page, it’s the same code. It’s not in my purchases either. It would download up 778 mb and just freeze.

    • Tyson Nielsen

Same here. I can’t get it to work. Not in purchases, same code, no download

  • Sean Dixon

What happens if you accidentally change your apple ID password in the middle of downloading yosemite? The download is showing ‘paused’ in the purchased section.

  • Colm Donnelly

At the moment, it won’t even redeem the code – no error message, it just doesn’t progress past the code redemption bit

    • superjedi

Thanks, I’m feeling less alone – Hope it will be fixed soon, I’ve thought it was my apple id.

  • kaleb

refreshing the page wont give me a new code….
    what do i do??????????????

    • Batman

You can leave the beta program in the FAQ section and signup again to get a new code. But right now it seems like the codes aren’t working for anyone. I suggest trying again in a couple of days.

      Because I’m Batman

  • TR4FF

Done it all and code doesn’t change it is attached to my Apple ID 🙁
I cleared website browser history and cleaned my mac, restarted but nothing new code remains same and message says “code already redeemed” any help please?

  • Jerry

The web site DOES NOT create a new redemption code! I have already read what Apple has said, I just want to know how to get a different redemption code.

    • Nathaniel Samuel Brown

Yeah Im getting the same thing man. No luck.

  • Thanos Tsimopoulos

Won’t redeem any code no matter the efforts. I’ve been trying everything for 2 days, guess it just won’t work.

  • Matt

The code never changes for me, even tried a different browser. My problem is, I redeemed the code for Beta 1 but after the release of Beta 3, I can no longer see Yosemite as a download option in the App Store.

  • Andras

Sorry but it doesn’t works. Always get the same reddem code after logged in 🙁

    • blue0rbit

To get a new code… from the screen where you see the redeem code, you need to scroll to the bottom and it the lower right corner click Leave Program, confirm that you want to leave, the click Sign Up, and go through it all again. It’s a bit of a moot point though as the MAS does not appear to be processing redeem codes right now as nothing happens when you enter in the correct redeem code.

      • Andras

Cool, now i have new code but the Redeem button is inactive so i cannot click on it… Thank you anyway. I think i have to wait the official release 🙁

      • blue0rbit

It seems to finally be working now; just tried it with probably my 17th new code and the app is downloading. Hopefully it doesn’t stall out, which I’ve read is the other issue.

  • Oh you know, the redeem button is missing on my mac…
