Mesalation: set a passcode grace period with Touch ID enabled

Mesalation

Mesalation is brand new jailbreak tweak from developer r_plus that allows you to get back the passcode grace period list when using Touch ID. Enabling Touch ID on the iPhone 5s forces iOS to require a passcode immediately and there are no options otherwise.

If you’re someone who likes to use Touch ID, but don’t necessarily like the idea of having to verify every time your device is locked, Mesalation is the jailbreak tweak for you. Have a look at our walkthrough inside for more details on how the tweak works.

Once Mesalation is installed, go to Settings > General > Touch ID & Passcode > Require Passcode. Instead of just seeing the single option for Immediately, you should see the default list of grace periods that are normally show with Touch ID disabled. The default options are immediately, after 1 minute, after 5 minutes, after 15 minutes, after 1 hour, and after 4 hours.

If you’re someone who would prefer to have a totally customizable grace period time, then I suggest you check out the tweak that Sebastien reviewed called PassTime. It, like Mesalation, allows you to increase the passcode grace period time, but PassTime gives you the option of inputting your own times instead of providing you with the default list of times to choose from.

With Mesalation enabled, you will no longer be required to verify with Touch ID or enter your passcode while under the established time threshold. In those cases, all it takes is a simple swipe on your Lock screen to unlock your device. Once the threshold expires, you’ll again be able to use your passcode or fingerprint to unlock your device.

The nice thing about Mesalation is that you can enjoy Touch ID without it being too overbearing and requiring verification each time you unlock your device. And better yet, you can still enjoy making purchases using Touch ID on the App Store, even while falling under the Lock screen grace period. If you’ve been listening to our jailbreak podcast, Let’s Talk Jailbreak, then you know that both PassTime and Mesalation are basically Sebastien and Cody’s dream tweaks.

There are no options or settings to configure for Mesalation outside of the time settings mentioned above. If you’d like to give the tweak a try, then head over to Cydia’s BigBoss repo where it can be downloaded free of charge. Let me know what you think about Mesalation in the comments section below.

If that’s the case, what’s the point of Touch ID? Just swipe and it’s unlocked. Faster too. :/

You can still make purchases using Touch ID. And you still have the underlying security there when it inevitably times out.

Touch ID has been proven to work very well so what exactly is the point here? iPhones are getting more and more personal with time so I don’t see how you would promote to be less secure with your phone

Exactly, but the reason I wanted it was so Activator actions would work while my device was off. Previously, I would assign a short-hold to my sleep button to the NowNow tweak (google search by voice). This wouldn’t work previously with TouchID on. Now I can set it to 15 minutes or an hour (convenience over security) before TouchID/passcode is required. So nice. (and free!)

If you have touch id enabled that means you’re more secure. If you set the grace period to a minute it’s more secure than not having a password at all. Though less secure than having the grace period be immediately.

I’m trying this tweak out. Only thing I don’t like is that I can’t unlock with my finger if it’s been under the grace period. I have to slide to unlock. I wish I could do either. Anybody know if pass time allows for the unlocking of finger and slide to unlock at the same time if it’s within the grace period? Hope this makes sense.

That was kinda of my beef with the PassTime tweak, but I thought I was the only one. Glad someone else feels the same. It’s a bit disorienting to not be able to use Touch ID if you ask me.

      • Tavish

I’ve gotten so used to using my finger to unlock that it takes me a few seconds to realize I can’t use it within the grace period. Oh well. Maybe I’ll get used to it after a few days??

I tried to set an Activator action to unlock by touching the sensor (only at the lock screen), but it didn’t work, so I set it to a single press of home instead.

    • Niclas

I’ve set up activator to unlock on short hold, this way it will unlock with activator if within grace time and touch id if outside of it.

      • deepdvd

Just set it the device to unlock with a single-press of the home button (only at lock screen). Why set it to short hold? That action should be for Siri

      • Niclas

Siri is not alvalible in sweden, and single tap unlock does not work for me..

  • deepdvd

Did Jeff add “After 4 hours” using PassTime or something? It’s not a default for me. I wonder if it’s because I have my work email on there, and it changed the defaults.

I like this idea. But I wish this was a flip switch to turn it on or off.

  • TeChNoStyLeZ

totally worthless using touchID is faster than swiping to unlock and secure

    • amazingrugs

Not completely useless. I always found it annoying with TouchID enabled you have to enter your passcode if you swipe to open a notification on your lock screen, so this can be used to get around that.

      Of course less secure though!

      • TeChNoStyLeZ

thats right but I think that when you get a notification on your device while its locked and you want to view by swiping on it from the lockscreen there will have passed those minites and you will have to enter the passcode again.

      • amazingrugs

        true true!

      • TeChNoStyLeZ

just checked it out , you can swipe on a notification and when it asks for the passcode put your finger on the homebutton to unlock via touch id

      • amazingrugs

did not know that thanks bud!

  • Mike Alexander

I’m only getting 1 and 5 minutes as options. Anyone else having this issue?
