Chrome for iOS (iPhone screenshot 009)

Google updated its iOS web browser yesterday to build 25.0.1364.86. The update brought about a handful of new features and improvements, including the option to share web pages via Messages and a tweaked Omnibox.

Unfortunately, the update also appears to have included a bug that, for a lot jailbreak users, causes Chrome to crash almost instantly after launch. But never fear, we’ve come across a way to fix this issue in just a few short steps…

We’ve actually seen a couple of fixes for Chrome crashing. There is a package in Flex called Chrome Fix Crash (v25), so if you happen to own the app that might be worth checking out.

But we’ve found a couple ways to fix the app manually:

First option:

  1. Delete the app
  2. Install Chrome again from the App Store
  3. Launch the app and agree to the option to send usage data

Second option:

  1. Launch Chrome, and perform the following tasks as quickly as possible.
  2. Tap the Menu button in the upper right hand corner (3 horizontal bars) and select Settings.
  3. Then you’ll want to tap the Privacy tab, and select the option to Send Usage Data.
  4. Change this option to Always and tap done in the upper right hand corner.

Again, you’ll have to work quickly. And don’t get discouraged if you don’t get it the first time. It took me a number of tries, but I can confirm, as can the other iDB team members and several readers, that this method does work.

Assumably, Google will see all of the user complaints and start working on a fix. But given the problem only seems to be affecting those who are jailbroken, we’re not sure how much of a hurry they’ll be in to push out the update.

Did this fix work for you? Have you found an easier method?

Thanks mysterious commenter

  • I just deleted and reinstalled and it fixed the crashing issue.

    • neo

After reinstalling you’ve accepted the send usage data to google that’s

why it worked otherwise it would not.

  • I Have been having the same problem with the YouTube app as well. The updates for both apps were released days apart. More and more apps are starting to crash rapidly after recent updates. Maybe app developers are causing the apps to crash purposly on only jailbroken devices?

    got it! 6 tries….

  • Uninstall and reinstall Chrome on your iDevice, then it will ask to accept the terms and conditions, don’t forget to select the option to Send Usage Data. At least with this method the app doesn’t close after 10 seconds.

  • Cody, three bars are horizontal, not vertical 🙂

    • Melvco

      whoops! thanks ;op

  • As people said there is a way better method to do this quickly and without any trouble:
    1. Uninstall the app
    2. Reinstall the app
    3. In the first page the app will ask you to accept the condition. Mark the option to send usage data right above the blue button that accept the term and condition and then go on.

This fix the app! It’s way more easier cause I couldn’t do the procedure in the article because the app crashed way too faster for me. I suggest to add this procedure too!
    Bye 🙂

  • I hoped to see something like “How to stop Chrome from automatic refresh when switching tabs”

    • batongxue

I don’t think that is auto refresh, I guess it’s cause by the memory shortage or some kind of hardware shortage of ALL tablets and smartphones.

A decent PC would never “Auto Refresh” the browser during switching tabs.

      • Of course, but we are in iDevices blog. So, we are talking about chrome in iDevices not PC, are’nt we?

      • batongxue

        You are not getting it.
My point is the shortage of hardware performance keeps causing the so called auto-refresh, I mentioned PC just to make a comparison with mobile devices.
I think this is quite plausible. Because no matter how good manufactures claim the performances of their tablets or cellphones are. They are still far behind PCs.
Just do not be fooled by those specs.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPad. But currently it can not overtake my PC.
BTW, being here in iDB does not mean we can not talk about PCs, we are even talking about Android, aren’t we?

      • Chrome auto refreshes a lot not like other browsers like Safari.
Also, iDevices can run games like Infinity blade and can’t handle web pages ?
        I don’t think so

Doesn’t work for me. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the app but it’s still crash without show me the option button on iPhone 4 6.1.2 Jailbroken. Anybody have the same problem?

    • I tried in safe mode and it works but when i come back to normal mode it crash again.. maybe some tweak are in conflict with the new version…

      • uninstall ALL chrome tweaks in Cydia should solve the problem

    • Guest

      no. not the same case

  • Mohammed Sahib

No problem on 2 my non- jailbroken iDevices.

    • batongxue

      Doubt it
This should have nothing to do with Jailbreak

      • Jonathan

        Read the article.

If you have Chrome Download Manager tweak installed in your jailbroken device (tested for iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.2 Jailbroken) You need:
    1. Remove Chrome Download Manaer Tweak using Cydia
    2. Uninstall the Chrome App
    2. Reinstall Chrome
    3. Open Chrome and mark the option to send usage data.

    • Yes, same case. It is confirmed in both my iPad and my iPhone 4.

uninstalling chrome download manager tweak was enough. Chrome is working now.

    • yes thanks it fixed, but if you reinstall chrome download manager it will crash again, hope the tweak developers update this.

    • the developer answered me that he’s upgraded the tweak to 1.7-1 and fix the issue but in cydia still to 1.6-1
      That’s weird! 😐

    • Qnzboiboi

Dude you are a fucking genius!!!

  • this little tweak works for me 🙂

  • how did you guys figure out doing this will fix this stupid issue? used some debugger or what ?

  • Its quicker to uninstall and reinstall chrome sp that it asks you (as if its the first time you set it up) if you want to send usage data.. You dont have to be that quick to do that 🙂

  • Isn’t possible to fix this via iFile?

    • Milad Khahil

Open “Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Local State” and change the “reporting_enabled” flag to “true”

      • Alexandre

        Actually the complete path is:
        var/mobile/applications/(chrome app folder)/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
Open/Edit Local State file and change to “true,”

      • Thanks, by the time I saw this, I’ve already reinstalled the browser :-/

  • Thank you so much Jeff!!

    • No Whammy

This article was written by Cody.

  • Mads Teland

Chrome Download Manager is only one that makes the crash, another tweaks like ChromeURL 1.0.0 and ChromeCustomization 1.0.1 does work with the new update 🙂

    • No Whammy

It crashes for me and I have no Chrome related tweaks installed but I am Jailbroken. Try not to make blanket statements that are inclusive of factors you haven’t encountered.

      • Mads Teland

It’s because you have the option send usage data turned off. But when I say it, I did have it on just only wifi, but all does work with the Chrome Crash Fix from hsbang repo 🙂

  • iDon’tWantToShareMyDetails

My problem with Flex is that it crashes the Weather app on my iPhone (though its not the same as the initial weather app crashes). once i remove Flex everything is back to normal… something is fishy here,

    • No Whammy

Do you have an Weather related patches enabled? The Weather app works fine for me on 6.1.2 iPhone 5 and Flex installed.

      • iDon’tWantToShareMyDetails

No i don’t have any fixes/patches installed, strange thing really, considering im not patching any function/library that the weather app might use.

  • batongxue

    I failed the quick move!
    Gotta re-install it.

  • Milad Khahil

Man you’ve got to be very fast to do that before it crashes …and finally succeeded after a few attempt 🙂

  • Alexandre

You can fix this by just changing a file with iFuxbox or iFile
    Go to:
    var/mobile/applications/(chrome app folder)/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

Open and edit the file called “Local State” and find this line:
    “reporting_enabled”: false,

Replace the “false,” to “true,” like this:

    “reporting_enabled”: true,

Restart or respring and you’re ready to go.

PS: I did this and didn’t have to unistall the app nor any cydia tweaks. I’m using the tweak Browser Chooser and it’s working.

    • chjode

How do I find the folder? I get a list of Application IDs with 25+ characters. How do I determine which is Chrome without opening each and looking into it?

Edit: Ah, got it. I had the app name display turned off in iFile. 🙂

      • Alexandre

        Are you on iFile?
If yes, go to the Settings inside iFile (the wrench icon bottom left) -> File Manager -> set Application Names to ON
If you’re using iFunbox, it shows the folder name instead the random characters.

      • chjode

        Yep, all set. Thanks!

    • It work with chrome download manager or not?

      • Alexandre

I don’t know. I said I only use Browser Chooser tweak.
Why don’t you give it a try?

      • fidel

        chrome sux

    • Omar

      Works Great! just tried it!!

  • Onur Gozupek

    It fixed 🙂

  • JV

ios 6.1.2 is full of bugs!!!!
it still have baterry drainage issue!!!
ios 6x use more RAM than 5x !!!
so many apps crashes on ios 6x!!!
apple stocked apps also crashes on ios 6x!!!
hi apple please make stable ios
plz contact developer behind jailbreak community they will help you!!!!!!!!!

    • Jonathan

Please contact a school, they will help you with grammar. And by the sounds of it you probably have an iPhone 3GS or an iPod touch 4th gen

  • Blahblahtldr

F that, I refuse to send any usage data to Google.
They can kiss it and ill be using Safari again.

    • No Whammy

From what I can tell the Flex patch briefly covered in the article *seems* to prevent the bug without enabling Send Usage Data. I can’t be certain, but the option is still set to “Never” in Chrome’s Settings.

For those who know more about development, the unit the patch utilizes is:
      Class: CrashReporterURLObserver
      Method: -(void)

And the Override Return Value is set to NONE

  • I uninstalled it and reinstalled the previous version of Chrome (version via iTunes). I’ll wait ’til Google provides a stable update instead of sending them all my usage data.

  • Lordthree

So it won’t load unless they track you? Nice. Google = big brother

  • JaeM1llz

Doesn’t work for me. I uninstall Chrome and then when I reinstall it, it still crashes immediately.

    • Jim Falcon

after you reinstall chrome try using your 3g connection instead of wifi. that might work.

  • AJ Ghmn

To all those who don’t want to let google track usage data, you can turn it off again after you accept to send it while reinstalling. I did that and it works fine, no more crashes, and no more tracking. 😀

  • prghon

Are you for real? Allowing Google to spy on me just to be able to use their browser? Give me a break!

  • Blahblahtldr

There is a update for the chrome download manager app on cydia that will fix this bug. No need to reinstall the app or anying of the sort.

  • Works me perfect!!! thanks

  • Dlevi309

Or..use xCon from cydia? Im guessing it works. Its worked for me in the past

  • Jimmy

    Thanks this work for me.

  • Ernie Marin

Well luckily I noticed the crash before erasing my recycle bin, so I was able to restore ver. 23 back until a fix for this is released, probably on Cydia.

  • keeny76

thanks. after a fresh install, the settings ‘allow to send usage data’ check box fixed it for me. it hasn’t crashed as yet.

Just an addition to the earlier note. I did the following:

    – Uninstall existing
    – Install afresh
    – Accept to send usage data on first screen
    – Opened up
    – Confirmed its working
    – Settings – Privacy – Usage – Never
    – Still working?

    Yup, its still working fine.

  • Justin Parker

FLEX package “Chrome Fix Crash (v25)” fixed it for me

    • No Whammy

Same here. It’s hard to tell if it’s still sending error reports to Google. If it doesn’t, this is by far the best solution. One clue is that in Chrome “Send Usage Data” is still set to “Never” …so I like my odds with this method.

  • Falk M.

Tip: If you want to play the game and enable it the manual way (no iFile, no annoying tweaks, etc) then enable flight mode, it seems to help the app accept user input immediately (instead of having to wait a moment until you can actually touch around (no pun intended but appreciated))

  • yadin

You can fix this by just changing a file with iFuxbox or iFile
    Go to:

    user applications->chrome->library->application support->google->chrome

    delete first run

    It’s like re-install the chrome

So mark sending data and it works

  • Jim Falcon

still crashes on me even after all that. damn

  • Robbie Speers

I uninstalled, re-downloaded and made sure it sent crash reports. Seems to work ok now, but keep in mine my phone isn’t jailbroken so no it’s not just those phones.
