Claimed photo of retooled iPad with Lightning connector

By , Oct 21, 2012

The rumor that Apple was looking to release a tweaked version of its third generation iPad this fall popped up back in June of this year. And at the time, it seemed crazy. Why would Apple refresh a 6 month-old product?

But over the past 4 months, the story has really started picking up momentum, as several reports have pointed to Apple unveiling the retooled iPad at its iPad mini event next week. Then today, this picture surfaced…

The image above is of what some folks believe to be the rumored tweaked iPad 3 with Apple’s new Lightning dock connector. 9to5Mac points to the photo, which was first posted by the reliable Apple.pro on Facebook.

The new (new?) iPad is rumored to utilize new IGZO display technology, better heat dissipation and LTE support for other countries. And although there doesn’t appear to be any external differences other than the new plug, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was thinner and lighter than the current version thanks to all of the changes.

So why would Apple want to replace a 6 month-old device? Well, it’s no secret that it was forced to make some compromises with the third gen iPad in the first place. The tablet is heavier and thicker than its predecessor, and its LTE tech isn’t global. Maybe it felt it couldn’t or didn’t want to wait until next year to fix some of this stuff.

Of course, nothing is final until Apple hoists it up on stage at next week’s event. But given all of the reports and the newly-surfaced part leaks, you have to believe that there’s at least some truth to the story.

As usual, iDB will be covering Apple’s media event on Tuesday. The fun starts at 10am PST, so tune in!

i think it is very likely that with both the iphone 5 and the 5th generation ipod, we will see the 3rd gen ipad with a lightning connector and a thinner profile.

If aapl does do this… then, WOULD THEY ALSO UPDATE THE IPAD IN MARCH? AND WHAT, EVERY YEAR, UPDATE THE LARGE IPAD IN NOVEMBER WITH THE IPAD MINI AND THEN ANOTHER IPAD EVENT IN MARCH? WHY CAN’T THEY DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME?

The New New iPad — Now with lightning

I just wonder if current iPad 3rd Gen users can upgrade to that for free.

Call me crazy, but I’d rather stick with my current iPad 3 on iOS 5.1, given the new models will likely take ages to jailbreak and there’s not a lot to get excited about with the changes mentioned.

Not to mention is hard/expensive to get lightening cables and accessories right now.

The upgraded LTE will be good for people in 1800Mhz areas though, but I it doesn’t relate to me as I only bought a wi-fi model.

if they saved that space by replacing 30 pin connector with lightning why didn´t put a better speaker ???

The New iPad, still Lightning fast.

I think it’s a iPad 4 or 3 cuz I don’t think they’re going to have two desperate events for two iPads…that’s why they released the “new iPad” not iPad 3.
