The iPhone Dev Team introduces new RE-Restore functionality into RedSn0w

By , Sep 19, 2012

Hot on the heels of the iOS 6 official release, the iPhone Dev Team, headline by its most prominent member, MuscleNerd, is making moves as well.

Today they introduce new RE-Restore functionality that will allow users on iOS 5.1.1 to restore their devices to a fresh install iOS 5.1.1. This can come in handy if you ever need a fresh install for whatever reason, i.e. a bad jailbreak install, etc.

For those eligible to use the RE-restore, this means that you never have to worry about losing your 5.1.1 jailbreak, as long as you don’t go near iOS 6. Check inside for the details…

The Dev Team lists 3 different scenarios for jailbreakers to be aware of:

  • A4 devices and 3GS will always be downgradable (and jailbreakable) due to limera1n. The tethered iOS6 jailbreak for those devices (and untethered for old-bootrom 3GS) will be out when Cydia and other important pieces are all working properly
  • iPad2 owners who have both 4.x blobs and 5.x blobs will always be able to downgrade to those versions, even once you come up to 6.0 and the 5.1.1 window closes (don’t do that yet though!). You need both 4.x and 5.x blobs to qualify for the downgrade even if you only wish to downgrade to 5.x
  • iPad3, i4S (and iPad2 owners who don’t satisfy #2) will always be able to RE-restore the current 5.x OS that’s already on their device. So if you’re at 5.1.1 when the window closes (and you’ve saved your blobs), you’ll always be able to RE-restore to 5.1.1 again. This makes the 5.1.1 jailbreak a lot less fragile — you don’t have to worry about messing up your install with funky extensions or getting into a boot loop, because you can always RE-restore from 5.1.1 to 5.1.1 again (or from 5.0.1 to 5.0.1 again, etc). But once you fall off the 5.x train by restoring to 6.x, you’ll be stuck there until the next jailbreak.

What does all of this mean? Basically, if you’re on an A4 device like an iPhone 4, you’re good. You will always be able to downgrade and jailbreak thanks to the limera1n exploit, and you can expect a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6 soon.

For A5 users and above, things get a bit more dicey. iPad 2 (A5) owners who have blobs from 4.x and 5.x saved will always be able to downgrade to those versions, even if you upgrade to 6.0 and the 5.1.1 window closes. But you will need your 4.x and 5.x blogs, even if you just want to downgrade to 5.x.

FOr iPad 3, 4S, and iPad 2 owners who don’t have blobs saved for 4.x and 5.x, things get even more stringent. First of all, if you care at all about a jailbreak, do not upgrade to iOS 6. If you do, and the 5.1.1 signing window closes, you’re stuck until an iOS 6 jailbreak is released. The good news is, is that if you stay on 5.1.1, there is a new RE-Restore function that will be built into the latest version of RedSn0w that will allow you to continuously restore to 5.1.1, even after Apple’s 5.1.1 signing window closes. This make staying jailbroken on 5.1.1 a lot less stressful, since you won’t have to continuously worry about installing some bad piece of code that forces you to restore back to 6.0, and in the process loosing your jailbreak.

Here is a video I made a while back, outlining how it was possible to downgrade an iPad 2. This new Re-Restore method plays off of soem serious deficiencies in the restore process. But again, once the 5.1.1 signing window closes, this particular method below will no longer work.

So in a nutshell, save your SHSH blobs while you still can for 5.1.1. Don’t upgrade yet if you want to keep your jailbreak, and most importantly, be patient. These guys are on it when it comes to releasing an iOS 6 tethered jailbreak for A4 hardware, and hopefully providing an iOS 6 jailbreak for A5 and A6 devices.

The Dev Team says that the new version of RedSnow with RE-Restore support should be out soon.

Clear as mud?

I’ve got a question; i4S is now off contract and awaiting unlock from AT&T, unlock process if not mistaken requires a restore to unlock, will I be stuck on iOS 6 upon restore process or will I have the option of restoring to iOS 5? I have my SHSH Blobs saved for 5.1.1, any help is greatly appreciated.

You will be stuck, unless you restore within the signing window for iOS 5.1.1.

      • http://twitter.com/the_ahj Alberto Hernandez

How long does that window typically stay open for? Also how’s the unlock from Cellular Medic working for you? I have Gevey Ultra S but heard MMS and SMS doesn’t work.

if you can live without using the phone at all simply restore to 5.1.1 today while apple is still signing it and just dont activate it until the unlock request has gone through. but realistically if you put in an unsupported sim card into any ios 5 it will bring you back to the activation screen (no need to restore at all). and for the record at&t may have already unlocked your phone. i have done several and they take their sweet time notifying you. (for example i have tested the unlock and it was completed, then a week later i will get a call or email saying that it is now complete when it was obviously done a week sooner. you may just want to check right now and see)

Thanks for heads up, I’ll give it a go and see what’s up.

u dont have to do a full restore on itunes. they even tell u that in the email they send u from att. all u have to do is right click on the phone name in itunes and click backup, this creates a backup point for that phone. then let a couple minutes go by and then right click and select restore from backup, it will bring up the back up u just did and restore it back to that point, if the phone is now unlocked it will come back from the back up screen and show u the congratulations u are now unlocked screen on itunes without having to update the actual software. if the phone u have is on the activation screen u will just put your tmobile chip in and activate it as normal if its unlocked it will get through the activation and let u proceed to the normal screen if its not unlocked it will say the sim u put in is not compatible.

You should be able to use RedSn0w to deactivate your iPhone 4s. Then when you plug it back in, iTunes will activate it and tell you your phone is now unlocked. I just did it yesterday to an iPhone 4. So no need to restore. There was a YouTube video demonstrating the process.

Dont do it. Wait for the updated Redsn0w within a few days from now 29/09/12

im confused… so if I upgrade to iOS 6, and I have an iPhone 4, does that mean I can downgrade back to iOS 5.1.1 if I want?

    • Stephen Lynch

      Yup yup

    • MOE

Yes if u have ur shsh blobs saved

    • MOE

U should have the shsh blobs saved then download the 5.1.1 Ipsw (firmware) then using red snow stitch the Ipsw with ur shsh blobs then go to dfu mode when u at d f u mode open iTunes press the shift key and while holding press on restore point to the Ipsw that u downloaded and stitched the blobs with that should do it that’s what I did on my iPod and its now on 5.1.1 after I updated to 6.0

Guys listen, currently I have an iPhone 4,4S (unlocked) n iPad 3, all r jailbreaked, on 5.1.1. Today I saved their blobs on 5.1.1 by tinyumb.. Now I want to update all iDevices to iOS 6 (I don’t need any jailbreak app currently), but if I again wants to go back on 5.1.1 for jailbreak tweaks. CAN I GO BACK TO 5.1.1 with Re-Restore method stated above (as I have already saved blobs of my all iDevices)???

    • sdmidnightrider

not for the 4s or ipad 3 because there isnt a way yet to go back to the iphone 5 software.

  • LilGreenGuy

will this downgrade process also work if the blobs are saved through cydia?

I hope this comes out soon!

I have a 3GS I bought it off Ebay Unlocked and jailbroken, I tried updating it today, and now the sim is unavailable and I can’t use it says “Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM.” I have tried resetting it, re-jailbreaking it but nothing seems to be working, so now I’m trying to downgrade to see it that works. I really need help ASAP. Please help me

    can I re-restore to 5.1.1 on a iPhone 4s

    • http://twitter.com/iOS_nerd12 JB

Yes. As long as you have your 5.1.1 shsh blobs saved and your device is currently on 5.1.1

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristinadreamsbig Kristina Erickson

My iPhone is having issues. I’m currently on 5.1.1. My blobs (5.1.1) are saved on my desktop, Tiny Umbrella, and Cydia. I do not have my 5.0.1 blobs. Does this mean I can’t perform the re-restore?
    Thank you :)

    • http://twitter.com/iOS_nerd12 JB

You don’t need your 5.0.1 blobs because you aren’t trying to restore to 5.0.1. You can go ahead and re-restore your device to 5.1.1 using your 5.1.1 blobs with no problems. Use the current redsn0w to re-restore and double check the instructions on how to re-restore so you don’t accidentally end up on iOS 6.

  • Alon

    hi guys.
i’m currently using ios 5.1.1. and never jailbroken my 4S. if i jail break 5.1.1 , is it possible to restore the same 5.1.1 (current ios version available is 6.0.1)
    please let me know.
    thanks

    • http://twitter.com/iOS_nerd12 JB

No. You need shsh blobs for iOS 5.1.1 and since you have never jailbroken your device it is unlikely that you saved your shsh blobs prior to the release of iOS 6 (when the iOS 5.1.1 signing window closed)

  • http://twitter.com/AldineRay رائد

I have an iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1 and I want to restore on iOS 5.1.1… I tried to re-restore using the latest redsnow but it said something about my apt ticket… Someone help

    • http://twitter.com/iOS_nerd12 JB

You can only re-restore to your current iOS version. So since you are on 5.0.1 you can only re-restore to 5.0.1 and not 5.1.1 for the time being.

  • Ted Greene

Hello I have a ? When is the jail break for 6.0.1 coming out I’m going crazy I lost my 4s and had to get a new one and its on 6.0.1 can someone help me
