If there was ever a project that embodied the Kickstarter spirt of turning a good idea into a real product, this is it. Meet the Foundation Dock, one of the coolest iPhone docks we’ve ever seen.

The accessory is made up of two parts: the Dock itself, which is basically a heavy aluminum base, and a flexible USB cable, which will allow you to use your iPhone in virtually any position…

First, we’ll talk about the Dock. It’s machined from solid aircraft grade aluminum, and is bead-blasted and anodized to match your iMac, MacBook, etc. It also features a total of six USB 3.0/2.0 ports, four of them powered, built-in microphone and speaker, and a shielded audio line out.

But while the Dock is nice, it’s the flexible USB cable that really stands out. It’s 16 inches long, and sturdy enough to hold your iPhone in almost any position. Its USB connector has a thick aluminum housing, and the slide-in cradle will hold any iPhone or iPod touch, with or without a case.

The cool thing is, the flexible USB cable can be used by itself, without the Foundation Dock. As you see in the video above, it can be plugged into your computer, or into a custom USB car charger.

The Kickstarter project has 24 days left to reach it’s goal of $37,000. If you’d like to help it hit that target, a pledge of $30 scores you a Flexible Cable, and $99 gets you the full Foundation Dock.

And in case you’re wondering, the developers are prepared for the iPhone 5‘s new dock connector.

So, what do you think of the Foundation Dock? Good idea, bad idea?

  • they look so cool

  • they look so small

  • they look so good

Um, question: How is the USB port on a laptop, PC, monitor supporting the weight? Especially in those pictures when it is in a vertical port like on a monitor? I call BS until someone can explain otherwise. Sayin…

    • I think the USB cable connects to the back of the big aluminum base. then the base handle all theweight

Kickstarter project Une bobine has a better idea!

What about the Une Bobine? The first production units have been shipped already, the rest will be shipped out the is coming week. I fail to see how this project is any better than Une Bobine…

Yeah I mean it looks cool in concept, but I question the weight as well hanging onto the USB port. Seems like a lot of weight for a USB port to support. Also, did anyone else notice the fact that the prototype lacked something? A power cord?! Does it operate on batteries? Or did they just not include one because it would look more cumbersome and less portable?

I’m not saying its bad, just saying there’s a couple of questionable things I didn’t see addressed.

  • Umm.. wont the new dock connector in 10 days destroy this?
