The Foundation Dock: an extremely versatile dock for your iPhone

If there was ever a project that embodied the Kickstarter spirt of turning a good idea into a real product, this is it. Meet the Foundation Dock, one of the coolest iPhone docks we’ve ever seen.

The accessory is made up of two parts: the Dock itself, which is basically a heavy aluminum base, and a flexible USB cable, which will allow you to use your iPhone in virtually any position…

First, we’ll talk about the Dock. It’s machined from solid aircraft grade aluminum, and is bead-blasted and anodized to match your iMac, MacBook, etc. It also features a total of six USB 3.0/2.0 ports, four of them powered, built-in microphone and speaker, and a shielded audio line out.

But while the Dock is nice, it’s the flexible USB cable that really stands out. It’s 16 inches long, and sturdy enough to hold your iPhone in almost any position. Its USB connector has a thick aluminum housing, and the slide-in cradle will hold any iPhone or iPod touch, with or without a case.

The cool thing is, the flexible USB cable can be used by itself, without the Foundation Dock. As you see in the video above, it can be plugged into your computer, or into a custom USB car charger.

The Kickstarter project has 24 days left to reach it’s goal of $37,000. If you’d like to help it hit that target, a pledge of $30 scores you a Flexible Cable, and $99 gets you the full Foundation Dock.

And in case you’re wondering, the developers are prepared for the iPhone 5‘s new dock connector.

So, what do you think of the Foundation Dock? Good idea, bad idea?
