Ever since iOS 5.1 was released last week, we started looking for new features that would have been quietly added to the iPhone or iPad. Two major ones were quickly found, both related to the data settings of your iPhone.

The first one unofficially turns your AT&T iPhone 4S into a 4G device, and the second one brings back the 3G toggle in the settings of your iPhone, assuming you are not using AT&T.

And now, a subtle new feature has surfaced to…

If you open a new page in Safari on your iPhone, the address bar, which used to show nothing but white space, now offers to “go to this address.” Tap on it to start typing the URL of the site you want to visit, and you’re on your way for some mobile web browsing.

And that’s all there is to it. It’s a very slight and simple addition that polishes up the look of Safari on your iDevice.

Additionally, when you open a blank page in Safari, your list of bookmarks doesn’t automatically pop up as it used to be. Again, very subtle but it probably makes your Safari experience that much better.

Have you found anything new in iOS 5.1? If so, make sure to let us know.

[Thanks Harrison Gomez]

    You’re a bit late with this…

    • Yeah, you’re definitely too fast for me.

Well, it’s a very obvious change, I saw it immediately when I opened Safari for the first time on 5.1 ….

      • if you were previously unaware, the fact that you saw this so quickly actually makes you cooler.

      • what a douche….

    • Yeah, you’re definitely too fast for me.

  • Another jailbreak tweak is included to iOS. “No Bookmarks” by chpwn.

    • I was never aware of that “No Bookmarks” tweak in Cydia. Thanks!

It’s nice that most of what I was jailbreaking for is included.. again. 🙂

But Apple, you need fucking theme support. Winterboard NEEDS to be included or something. Seriously.

I’m telling you now, Apple will never, ever allow Winterboard. Remember my words for the rest of your life.

You are absolutely correct, I know…. but I can wish and hope and stomp and up and down and jailbreak the moment it’s available… but it would still be nice.

What are you talking about dude, Apple allow you to change the wallpaper, what more do you want lol .. On a serious note though, they are control freaks and are so out of touch when it comes to what people want from an OS .. They either copy stuff from Android or rip off jailbreak tweaks and implement them but they have a gorgeous green and grey colour to the whole UI so how could anybody possibly not like that !! (sarcasm)

Hey, I like leftover meatloaf as a color as much as the next color-blind guy, except I’m not colorblind. 🙂 You know when the status bar icons have different gradients and lighting sources there is a problem. They can’t even keep the eight icons on the status bar consistent. That’s why I jailbreak. Of course, I needed 5.1 for my battery life, so it’s plain vanilla but my battery life it through the roof, so it’s worth it for me.

What are you talking about? Their OS UI is clean, and fluid. Which is more than anyone can say about Android in any flavor. Also, I gave up on themes a long time ago. They are pretty in their screenshots, but that is it. They add absolutely nothing to the user experience, and usually look about as cheesy as it gets. The stock UI looks fine, unless you are one of those types that thinks putting the internet explorer icon over the safari icon is “cool”.

  • I mentioned this in the comments when iOS 5.1 beta 3 came out. Oh well

Is it really worth making an artical about this…

    • If you think it’s not worth making a post about it, it’s probably not worth leaving a comment either 😛

  • No Whammy

    This blog deserves a Pulitzer.

    • Now that’s what I’m talking about. lol

  • On location settings theres a new icon for 5.1, “an outlined location services icon” 😉

  • Sebastien when you say “assuming you are not using AT&T.” do you actually mean “assuming you are using AT&T.”

  • NOTHING HUGE, but I noticed the icon for when a song is playing is different.

In the Music App, instead of having a shadow of a speaker and three waves next to the song currently playing, there’s a much more detailed graphic. Private browsing doesn’t crash anymore when you switch to normal browsing. With the new swipe-up camera, you can also swipe down to go back to the lock screen. Settings>wallpaper now shows your Current wallpaper as well as with the springboard. In settings>international, the example format at the bottom is much larger than before. Cover Flow doesn’t load all the albums in High resolution, but only on the selected album. That’s about it.

not sure if new to 5.1 but when you double tap the home key… and hold down your finger on the apps most recently used, you can now easily delete them. very useful for quick re-starting bugged apps.

    • That’s been there for a long time

      lmao

  • Spotlight now works properly searching emails. Before many people found they had ro uncheck search email to get it to work with contacts etc.
    Valuable improvement.

  • i think the google app is better….works better than safari in my opinion….

  • One less tweak on my device!
