On Android’s Software Fragmentation

We've expressed our opinions on Android software multiple times here on iDB. You can imagine that, as an iPhone blog, we are a little biased towards the iOS platform, but our issues with Android don't come unwarranted.

One of our beefs with Android is that its apps seem to lack the polish that iOS apps have — even in software that is available on both platforms. Why is that? Well, not only do developers have to worry about multiple screen sizes, they also have to worry about multiple versions of Android...

Apple TV Software 4.4.2 Now Available for Download

The Cupertino company has had a rough time sorting out its Apple TV updates over the past few weeks. It seems that all the trouble started when Scott Forstall's team released iOS 5 to the public earlier this month.

Last week Apple released a software update for its media hub (4.4.1), but it was immediately pulled due to customer complaints. Apparently re-releasing it still didn't do the trick, because tonight Apple seeded 4.4.2 to Apple TV owners...

Apple Quietly Updates iPad 2 Smart Covers

Apple today took a hammer to its curent lineup of iPad 2 Smart Covers, discontinuing one color and adding another. The rest of the lineup has also been given a minor makeover, according to MacRumors.

The move comes alongside a silent MacBook Pro refresh, with Apple choosing not to make an announcement about the changes to either product.

Smart Covers have proven popular amongst iPad 2 owners who want to protect their giant 9.7" screen without adding the unwanted bulk of a full-on case. These changes refresh the six-month old colors, while also making the interior of all Smart Covers the same color as the exterior – a change that should have been made before they ever went on sale! The Product RED cover is still two-tone, though...

Semitethered Jailbreak Updated with Bug Fixes and Speed Improvements

BigBoss has pushed an update to the semitethered jailbreak that brings multiple bug fixes and speed improvements. Version 0.7.9 of SemiTether is available in Cydia now for folks on iOS 5 that have jailbroken with a tool like RedSn0w.

The SemiTether jailbreak is being improved to make it a more viable contender to a full untethered jailbreak. BigBoss is working with saurik to improve his jailbreak alongside a mobile substrate Cydia update.

RedSn0w Jailbreak Gets Much Faster

One of the biggest complains people have about RedSn0w is how long it takes to go through the jailbreaking process. This is due to the fact that RedSn0w spends a lot of time "stashing" applications on your device.

Due to the demand for a faster tool, the Dev Team announced today that they have made the RedSn0w jailbreak process 60% faster by releasing version 0.9.9 beta 7. But it's not without a caveat...

Apple Releases Apple TV 4.4.1 Update… Again

Yesterday we reported that Apple had released iOS 4.4.1 for the Apple TV. Unfortunately, minutes after pushing the update, many users reported that the new software was actually "bricking" their device, which let Apple to pull the plug and stop the release of 4.4.1.

It seems that Apple has fixed the issue and has started pushing iOS 4.4.1 for Apple TV again late last night...

RedSn0w Updated to Bring Windows Compatibility and Fix Location Bug

Apple Releases iOS 4.4.1 Update for Apple TV [Updated]

Apple has released a minor iOS update for the Apple TV 2G. Following the release of iOS 5 to the public last week, iOS 4.4 was released for the latest Apple TV.

Update 4.4.1 brings bug fixes and minor improvements. Apple is likely tightening up some of the features that it introduced in the last update.

Apple Steps Up Its Game Against Jailbreaking

Apple has been battling against the jailbreak scene for nearly 4 years. Every time hackers find an exploit, Apple is right there to release a software update to patch it. But boot-level exploits, like GeoHot's Limera1n, are much harder to fix.

In fact, Limera1n continues to be used for iOS 5 jailbreaks on pre-A5 devices. So, Apple had to think outside the box with their latest mobile software update. They had to come up with something to try and slow down the hackers. And they did...

Apple’s Servers Start Stabilizing, Should Be Safe to Update to iOS 5

If you were one of the many people that tried to update to iOS 5 yesterday, you probably ran into a few problems. Apple updated and released an incredible amount of software yesterday, and the company's servers couldn't handle the heavy traffic.

When iOS 5 dropped mid-day, Apple's backend got crushed with download and verification requests from users wanting to install iOS 5. Now, it seems that things are mostly back to normal, and you should be able to update to iOS 5 without a problem.

“An Internal Error Occured” When Updating to iOS 5

If you've been trying to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the newly released iOS 5, you might have encountered the error message saying that you're device could not be restored because an "internal error occurred." In most cases, you'll get the "3004" error message, too.

If that's the case, do not freak out. Breath and relax. Apple's servers are getting slammed with thousands of people trying to do the exact same thing as you...
