Tim Cook

Tim Cook opposed suing Samsung in 2011, but was overruled by Steve Jobs

There's an interesting report out this morning that takes an in-depth look at the so-called "frenemy" relationship between Apple and Samsung. The connections between the two are certainly odd, as they are competitors, supply chain partners and suing each other around the world.

Their latter association is perhaps the most known in recent years. The two companies' high profile court battles over who copied who have been very public, especially the most recent one in northern California. And according to Reuters, the whole thing started over the Galaxy Tab...

Tim Cook talks earnings, Android, and more at Town Hall meeting

As expected, Tim Cook addressed the troops on Friday at a Town Hall meeting held on Apple's Cupertino campus. The CEO was reportedly fired up during the assembly, as he congratulated his employees on their record-breaking quarter.

Cook also talked about a number of topics at the meeting, including the company's recent stock slide, its growing competition with Android, the  current status of its retail operations and more...

Apple CEO praises employees for their ‘incredible hard work and focus’

Following up on yesterday's record fiscal 2013 first-quarter earnings release (which, unsurprisingly, has failed to impress Wall Street), Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an email to employees last night. The internal communiqué congratulates employees on their performance as Cook thanks everyone on their "incredible hard work and focus" that has resulted in 75 million iDevice sales during the holiday quarter.

He also announced Apple will be holding a Town Hall meeting today at 10am Pacific time and invited employees to submit questions via AppleWeb. Cook, like his predecessor Steve Jobs, holds Q&A sessions with employees following quarterly earnings to discuss business, strategy and the future. We'll be keeping a close eye on today's meeting to fill you in with interesting tidbits throughout the day...

Apple expanding LTE support to 36 new carriers next week

iPhone 4s

During Apple's quarterly earnings call yesterday, Tim Cook announced that Apple would be adding 36 additional carriers to the list of compatible LTE providers for its iPhones and iPads next week.

The good news is, Cook says these carriers will be in countries that are not currently supporting LTE. So for those of you who have a 4G iPhone or iPad and don't currently get LTE, be on the lookout...

Tim Cook addresses rumors on part order cuts and bigger/cheaper iPhones

Towards the end of Apple's earnings call earlier today, Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer fielded a number of questions from analysts. And of course, many of them took the opportunity to question the two on the validity of recent rumors.

The Wall Street Journal's 'Apple cutting iPhone 5 part orders' story, the recent 4.8-inch iPhone meme, and the ongoing budget iPhone rumor were all brought up during the Q&A session. And Tim Cook (sort of) addressed each one...

Tim Cook will be questioned in anti-poaching case

Apple CEO Tim Cook will be questioned on February 20 alongside Google chairman Eric Schmidt, former Intel boss Paul Otellini and other top ranking officials of Silicon Valley companies in regard to allegations that these tech giants illegally instituted anti-poaching measures for financial gains.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered Cook to be questioned by plaintiff attorneys for four hours. Five former employees of Apple, Google, Intel and others filed a civil suit alleging their former employers conspired to eliminate competition for each other's employees...

Tim Cook is design-savy after all

When it comes to industrial design, watchers stubbornly refuse to give Apple's boss Tim Cook the benefit of the doubt. Cook is not a product person, critics argue.

He's a numbers guy who obsesses over spreadsheets while paying little attention to product design, haters often cry. And because of this, Apple of course is doomed.

Journalist Nick Bilton shares an interesting little anecdote in his Sunday piece for The New York Times that I think proves the opposite, that Tim Cook is very much aware of the importance of design in product development...

Cook on new products, China Mobile, retail and why he loves China

Apple's Tim Cook is on his second China tour since becoming the CEO. Cook has attended meetings in Beijing with government officials, he visited Apple stores and met with China Mobile, the world's top carrier with 700 million subscribers, to talk "matters of cooperation" amid intensifying rumors of a possible iPhone deal with that carrier.

Apple's chief also confirmed that the cellular version of the iPad mini will arrive on the mainland in late January and talked business and discussed wide-ranging topics with the Chinese media on Thursday, here are some choice quotes...

Cook confirms cellular iPad mini coming to China late January

Tim Cook visited China for the second time since taking over as CEO of Apple in August of last year. In an interview with Chinese reporters, Cook officially confirmed that the cellular version of the iPad mini will arrive on the mainland in late January after the device gained a regulatory approval in mid-December 2012.

Both the iPad 4 and the Wi-Fi-only model of the iPad mini made a landfall in the country on December 7, following the iPhone 5's debut a week earlier which sold two million units during its opening weekend...

Tim Cook meets with China Mobile head to talk ‘matters of cooperation’

Earlier this week, we passed along a report that Tim Cook was on a business trip in China. No one really knows the exact nature of the visit, but he has been meeting with high-level government officials, and dropping in on Apple retailers.

And according to a new report, he's also been talking with China Mobile's Xi Guohua. The CEO is said to have met with the chairman, who sits atop the world's largest carrier, in Beijing today to discuss "matters of cooperation."

Amid swirling iPhone mini rumors, Tim Cook meets China’s high-level officials

Apple CEO Tim Cook is fast becoming a frequent visitor to China. Cook's meeting with that country's Industry and IT Ministry to discuss the near doubling of Apple Stores follows an early visit to quiet critics of Foxconn and rumors of iPhone sweatshops. China's Ministry of Industry and Information announced Cook met with the agency's Miao Wei.

The subject of talk: Apple's business goals for China, as well as global communications. Since a trip to China in March 2012, the number of Apple Stores there have increased to 11 from 6...

Senior Apple execs get a pay raise

Tim Cook's CEO salary for the calendar year 2012 was $4.17 million, which includes a $1.36 million salary and $2.8 million in compensation related to incentive plans, reveals a document Apple filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Now, a bunch of media outlets pointed out that Cook's salary dropped 99 percent versus 2011. Such sensationalist reporting couldn't be farther from the truth.

Cook's $376 million compensation in 2011 and $52 million in the year before was given to him in stock options and these won't vest until 2016 and 2021.

So yeah, Cook's 'salary' did drop 99 percent this year versus 2011, but without stock awards (his base salary last year was $900,000). The filing also reveals the company gave a pay raise to a select few members of its executive team to reflect their increased responsibilities following the departure of SVP of iOS software Scott Forstall, announced in October...
