Breaking down the iPhone 6s model numbers and LTE band capabilities

Apple is shipping four different models of iPhone for its yearly refresh. The iPhone 6s sports two models—A1633 and A1688, while the iPhone 6s Plus feature models A1634 and A1687.

Although both iPhones in the 6s and 6s Plus lines are virtually the same, the model numbers differentiate the cellular LTE band capabilities of each phone. Thus, by familiarizing yourself with each model number, you can learn what networks each phone will support.

Why is this important? Say you wanted to order a new iPhone 6s in rose gold. As you might have heard, rose gold is proving to be very popular, and is selling out quicker than some of the other iPhone color options. Rose gold 64GB iPhones designated for T-Mobile and Verizon are now on backorder for 2-3 weeks.

But some rose gold models remain available—for example, some Sprint-designated rose gold models are still shipping on 9/25. Sprint’s brand new ‘iPhone Forever’ plan lets you pick up a new iPhone anytime you want

T-Mobile overtakes Sprint to become third largest US carrier

It's official. T-Mobile has overtaken Sprint to become the third largest carrier in the United States. During its earnings call on Tuesday, Sprint told investors that it ended its most recent quarter, which ended in June, with 56.8 million customers.

That falls just shy of the 58.9 million subscribers T-Mobile finished with in its most recent quarter, which also ended in June, officially moving the Magenta-colored company into the third largest US carrier spot, behind AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Verizon and Sprint to pay $158 million in bill cramming settlement

The FCC announced on Tuesday that Verizon and Sprint have agreed to pay $158 million to settle their bill cramming investigations with the Commission. Verizon Wireless will pay $90 million and Sprint Corporation will pay $68 million, and much of that will go to consumer refunds.

"For too long, consumers have been charged on their phone bills for things they did not buy," said the oft-outspoken FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. “We call these fraudulent charges ‘cramming,’ and with today’s agreements we are calling them history for Verizon and Sprint customers.”

Monday, U.S. wireless carrier Sprint announced Direct 2 You, an industry-first new service that sends a retail-trained Sprint expert to your home or other location who will deliver and set up your iPhone or other device, promising to change how customers buy or upgrade their phones, tablets and other mobile devices.

In addition to bringing a mobile device to your own home, office or other location of your choice, Sprint's experts will set it up on your behalf and transfer all the content, including contacts, pictures, videos and apps, from an old device to a new one, simplifying switching from one platform to another.

Sprint will pay what it costs for you to switch carriers

Sprint really wants your business. Not only will it cut your bill in half, but now the nation's fourth-largest carrier will pay the early termination fee and any remaining payments at its competitors for you to come over to its network.

The early termination fee is why many customers don't make the switch from one carrier to another. In many cases, the fee is required to be paid to end the two-year contract carriers like to lock you into.

Sprint launches $65 per month unlimited plan for iPhone 6

Sprint announced on Friday it's beginning a $65 per month unlimited plan for the iPhone 6, exclusively offered through Best Buy.

The plan is called the "Best Buy One Plan" and requires a customer to lease a 16GB iPhone 6 with a two-year contract (which is $20 per month).

Sprint unveils new $90 per month plan with 12GB of shared data for up to ten lines

Friday, United States wireless carrier Sprint kicked off a new promotion offering customers up to ten lines of shared unlimited talk and text and twelve gigabytes of LTE data in exchange for $90 per month.

Also, the data access charge for phones on the $90 Family Share Pack plan went from $25 to $15.

The aggressively priced plan, Sprint insists, is a better value than comparable offerings from rivals AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile. The carrier says the promotion is available until March 12, 2015.

T-Mobile claims it’s third largest US carrier over Sprint

T-Mobile CEO John Legere claims that his Uncarrier is now the third largest carrier in the United States, overtaking Sprint for the spot behind AT&T and Verizon. Legere had been predicting the overtaking of Sprint for sometime, and he finally made the claim it's happened during T-Mobile's earnings call Thursday afternoon.

Unlocking your iPhone gets a little bit easier today

The process of unlocking your iPhone became a little bit easier today in the United States. Today marks the deadline for wireless carriers to adopt the unlocking standards of the late-2013 agreement set forth by the CTIA.

The agreement is industry-wide, and mandates that carriers adhere to 6 rules including clearly posting their unlocking policies online, and offering to unlock postpaid handsets once the customer's contract has expired.
