Rumors

Color is a talent acquisition

You may have heard that Color Labs, a Palo Alto-based startup that raised $41 million on the concept of a media sharing app called Color, has collapsed as its shareholders and board last week voted to shut the company down. There's a chance you also felt excited about the prospect of Apple acquiring Color Labs for “high double-digits” millions and breathing new life into the company, per Ken Yeung and Matthew Panzarino of The Next Web.

Looks like the authors got it wrong because what Apple has really paid a couple million bucks for is its handful of engineers because the company itself is worthless. A new report by a blog owned by well-informed The Wall Street Journal has it that Apple is reportedly paying something to the tune of $2 to $5 million for  Color Labs’s engineering team comprised of about 20 people...

Google invites press to October 29 Android event

Google has sent out press invitations this afternoon for an Android event to take place on October 29th. The shindig will kick off at 10 a.m. EST at Basketball City in New York.

The invitation itself doesn't give many clues as to what could be announced. But given the fact that the holidays are just around the corner, we're guessing it's new hardware...

Rumor: the iPad 4 coming in mid-2013 with simpler manufacturing design

Next Tuesday will hopefully bring us a small form-factor iPad (affectionately called by the press the iPad mini), perhaps some refreshed Macs and possibly a tweaked iPad 3 with support for UK's upcoming 4G LTE network in the 1,800MHz band from carrier Everything Everywhere (currently, the iPad 3 uses the 700 and 2100MHz band). It's all part of Apple's aggressive roll out planned for 2012, but that doesn't mean the rumor-mill is standing still.

Quite the contrary, a new rumor out of Asia is claiming the company's already warned its supply chain to prepare for a fourth-generation iPad in mid-2013. Perhaps learning from the ongoing manufacturing woes plaguing the iPhone 5 and reportedly affecting the iPad mini launch volume, Apple is thought to be switching to "a simpler manufacturing design"...

iPad mini release date allegedly pegged at November 2

As Apple gets to show us "a little more" next Tuesday, and taking into account that Microsoft's Surface tablet will hit store shelves next Friday, watchers have been wondering whether the iPad mini will be immediately available following the introduction, on the Friday following the event or the following week. The iPhone 5, for example, was unveiled on Wednesday, September 12 and hit store shelves the following week on Friday, September 21. According to a new report citing a source close to a major UK retailer, the iPad mini will hit retail stores on November 2 (that's a Friday)...

Panasonic reportedly looking to find its way into Apple’s supply chain for the iPad

Apple has traditionally used Samsung displays in products and lately has begun sourcing portable screens from other suppliers, namely LG Display, Japan Display and Sharp. If a new business report out of Japan is correct, Panasonic will exit the TV biz to focus on churning out displays for portable electronics, with a strong focus on Apple's iPad.

It actually makes sense. Due to price wars eating into the already razor-thin margins, LCD TV sets have become a highly unprofitable affair for Japan's consumer electronics makers - just ask Sharp.

Perhaps having sensed that Foxconn and Apple grew tired of saving Sharp and coping with yield issues plaguing its cutting-edge display plant in Osaka, Panasonic is now thought to have already sent sample LCD panels to Cupertino and Apple "seems to be satisfied"...

Analyst says T-Mobile could finally land the iPhone in 2013

Here we go again. T-Mobile USA, the nation's fourth-largest carrier and the only major U.S. telco without Apple's iconic smartphone, should finally land the latest iPhone early next year, if an analyst with Morgan Stanley is to be trusted.

This isn't the first time analysts made such an estimate and the carrier on its part has been appeasing to its iPhone-totting customers with free support to unlockers, Nano SIMs for the iPhone 5 and a broad marketing push to sell Apple users to its unlimited data plans...

Alleged iPad mini part numbers show 24 models

iDB yesterday informed you about possible price points for the iPad mini discovered in the system of a German retailer. Today, we bring you a full list of alleged iPad mini part numbers, showing 24 different models based on price, color and storage capacity. Most telling of all, it appears Apple will offer the device in WiFi, 3G and 4G LTE configurations...

AU Optronics seen boosting output of iPad mini screens ahead of next week’s unveiling

Having solved yield issues, Taiwan’s maker of flat panel displays AU Optronics (AUO) is said to be boosting its output of displays for the iPad mini, with Apple being so confident in AUO's ability to deliver that it upped orders by 50 percent to three million panels (Apple's striving to produce ten million iPad minis).

The screens should trickle down to assembly factories later this month, giving hope that Apple will have ample supply of parts at its disposal to manufacture enough iPad minis for the rumored October 23 introduction. If history is an indication, the iPad mini should be available either right after the keynote or a week or two following the presser...

Amazon said to be looking to buy Kindle chip supplier Texas Instruments

Online retailer Amazon is considering an acquisition of Texas Instruments, a maker of mobile processors used in a variety of tablets and smartphones. The rumor arrives just as Texas Instruments confirmed it's been struggling to upend its main rivals Nvidia and Qualcomm for orders.

According to Reuters, citing a report by Israeli financial newspaper Calcalist (which last December broke news of Apple's acquisition of Anobit), Amazon is "in advanced talks" to buy Texas Instruments for an undisclosed sum...

Revamped iMacs, 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro due alongside iPad mini next week

As October 23 approaches, the word on the street is that Apple alongside the iPad mini will unveil a redesigned iMac with a curved shell "like a water droplet", updated Mac minis a new 13-inch MacBook Pro notebook featuring the Retina display. Hot on the heels of last month's introduction of the iPhone 5, fifth-generation iPod touch and the new iPod nano, Apple apparently isn't done updating its existing lineup, per one analyst who recently called for eight Apple product releases by end of 2012...

Alleged iPad mini prices leak

According to a purported screenshot claiming to be from an internal system of a German retailer, the iPad mini could cost anywhere between €249 for the entry-level model to €649 for the top of the line model. This translates to $320 for the base model and $840 for the flagship one, although U.S. prices are likely to be lower because gadgets in Europe typically cost more due to a higher cost of doing business on the continent. In total, eight different models are said to be on offer...

Reuters reaffirms reports of October 23 Apple event

Friday morning, a report surfaced claiming that Apple was planning to hold a media event on October 23 to announce the long-rumored iPad mini. But given that we heard a similar story for the 17th, we remained skeptical.

Then later that day, the well-connected Jim Dalrymple gave his "yep" of approval on the date, further confirming it. But if that's not enough proof for you, a major news outlet has just added its weight by backing the story...
