Viki, Nickel and other apps to check out this weekend

This was a pretty interesting week for iOS releases. We have a Siri-like voice assistant, a well-designed Wikipedia client, an app for sending out random messages, and a new money management app that helps teach kids the value of saving. Check out all of these, and a fun new twitch game in this week's entry of Apps of the Week.

Jailbreak tweaks of the week: SpringInvaders, Seeker, & more…

Happy Sunday everyone! – And on that note, it's time for another roundup of the tweaks that we've shown you and have been released in Cydia this week.

It has been a slow but interesting week in terms of new jailbreak tweak releases, but without a jailbreak for more recent iOS firmware versions, the Changes tab in Cydia is feeling a wee bit dry.

Nevertheless, we'll go over this week's tweak releases so you're up to date on everything that went on this week.

Another Sunday, another opportunity to show you what's new in Cydia for the week!

Ranging from free to paid, this week's jailbreak tweak releases in Cydia have been few and far in between; that is, until the Updates tab blew up over the weekend with tons of new releases. Still, there have been some noteworthy releases that we think some jailbreakers will get excited about; others will improve security, and some are even utilitarian.

In this roundup, we'll show you everything that's new in Cydia this week, and we'll also be pointing out our favorite releases.

Apple vs the FBI: a recap of this week’s events

FBI and Apple logos

When a federal judge in California ordered Apple to aid the FBI in an investigation earlier this week, she sparked what many believe is the most important privacy debate in recent memory. The FBI wants access to the passcode-locked iPhone of one of the shooters involved in last year's San Bernardino massacre, and it wants Apple to help it break in.

At a high level, this seems pretty simple: the FBI has bad guy's phone; it wants to use it to try and stop other bad guys; it needs Apple's help to do that. But you don't have to zoom in very far to see that it's much more complex. Apple refused to help the FBI, saying that the request "undermines the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect."

That was on Wednesday. Here is everything that has happened since.

5 third-party Mac apps I use every day

My top 5 accessories for the iPhone

There are seemingly endless choices for iPhone accessories out there, and I've got to tell you, I go through iPhone accessories like candy. One day I like something I'm using, and another day I find it to be a nuisance and I end up leaving it at home and buying something completely different to suit my needs.

Regardless, there are still some accessories that I still use on a day-to-day basis, and in this piece, I'll show you my top 5 favorite iPhone accessories that I actually use on a daily basis and why.

Some of the Mac apps known to be affected by the Sparkle vulnerability

A vulnerability discovered in an outdated version of the Sparkle updater framework that many third-party OS X apps depend on for serving the user with regular updates has been getting a lot of attention recently.

As we reported on Tuesday, the security problem affects a number of third-party Mac apps downloaded from the internet, and not apps downloaded from the Mac App Store. The vulnerability roots from the lack of an encrypted connection and gives a malicious hacker the ability to perform a man-in-the-middle attack.

But what OS X apps are affected? This is the information you need to know as soon as possible to keep your Mac safe from potential malware threats.
