Hands on with Clips, Apple’s new social video editing app

Apple today released Clips, its brand new social video editing app that was previewed on March 21 as part of the company's Spring product refresh. Available at no charge on App Store, Clips comes with some interesting features, like voice-activated captions, effects, emoji, animated speech bubbles, motion backgrounds, built-in soundtracks and more.

After spending some time with Clips, our own video editor Andrew O'Hara has created a video walkthrough showcasing just how easy it is to create fun videos that are sharable on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networks.

Is Apple working on 8K display for its completely rethought Mac Pro?

Apple is working on a “completely rethought” Mac Pro model with a highly modular design, slated for release in 2018, that should cater to the needs of its most-demanding pro users. As confirmed by company executives earlier this week, its engineers are also developing an external display that will launch at some point next year, too.

According to the Pike's Universe blog, the rumored Apple-branded display will feature a massive 8K resolution, giving it twice the pixels of a standard 4K screen and sixty percent more pixels than the 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display.

The next version of macOS won’t use a mountain/park name

As part of its list of supposed hardware upgrades coming to Apple's pro-level iMacs later this year, the Pike's Universum blog mentioned in passing that the next major version of macOS (10.13) won't use a mountain or a park name anymore.

Following up on a comment from Apple's Phil Schiller regarding upcoming iMacs with pro-grade features, Pike's Universum today shared a few specifics on what said upgrades might entail. Citing a “pretty accurate” source, the blog claims next-gen iMacs will feature Intel's more powerful Xeon E3 chips with up to sixty-four gigabytes of Error-Correcting Code (ECC) RAM, faster flash storage with capacities up to two terabytes, Thunderbolt 3, USB-C and more.

Clips, a new video creation app from Apple, is now available for download on App Store. Previewed on March 21 as part of Apple's Spring product refresh, Clips lets you create expressive videos on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with just a few taps. The app includes some nifty features like a selection of cartoonish effects and the ability to create captions on the fly using just your voice. Clips is available on App Store at no charge and requires iOS 10.3, which launched last week.

iPhone manufacture Foxconn reports highest-ever holiday quarter net profit

Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn Technology Group, counts Apple as its key client. Foxconn assembles iPhones and their Apple contract accounts for more than half of the Taiwanese company's earnings. Yesterday, Foxconn reported both its highest-ever holiday quarter net profit and highest-ever gross margin since first-quarter 2013.

Apple reportedly signs 2-year supply contract with Samsung for curved OLED panels

A report in ETNews, cited by DigiTimes, claims that Apple recently negotiated a major two-year supply deal with Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, regarding curved OLED panels for future iPhones. Samsung's display-making arm produces more than 90 percent of all OLED panels for smartphones and tablets.

Twitter Lite launches, takes only 1MB of storage & can save up to 70 percent on data

If you're a heavy Twitter user whose device is running low on storage and you'd like to reduce data usage in the mobile Twitter app, the company today announced a new solution that may interest you, aptly named Twitter Lite. It's a client-side Progressive Web App written in JavaScript and running in Safari on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Taking up only one megabyte of storage on your device, Twitter Lite loads in under five seconds on a 3G cellular connection and can save up to 70 percent on data.

F-Secure buys Jonathan Zdziarski’s Mac security app Little Flocker

Finnish security company F-Secure announced the acquisition of the Mac security app Little Flocker created by iOS security researcher and former jailbreak developer Jonathan Zdziarski. As we told you, Zdziarski joined Apple’s Security Engineering and Architecture team last month.

Little Flocker offers protection against ransomware, spyware, malware, trojans, back doors, misbehaving applications and other threats to private data stored on your Mac.

Google’s $35 per month YouTube TV service launches in five US cities

Announced a month ago, Google's live TV streaming bundle launched today in five U.S. markets. Named YouTube TV, it's available in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago.

YouTube TV gives you access to live TV streaming from Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and popular cable networks along with content from 39 other local broadcast networks and channels like ESPN, in exchange for $35 per month.

3D artist Martin Hajek imagines what iPhone 8 with nearly full-screen face might look like

Dutch 3D artist Martin Hajek is behind some of the best conceptual renderings that we've featured here on iDownloadBlog. Recently, he teamed up with German magazine Computer Bild to do a batch of renderings for them imagining Apple's upcoming iPhone X aka iPhone 8 aka iPhone Edition.

The images hit all the right notes, from a curved AMOLED display with no visible side bezels to an almost full-screen face with no visible chin at the bottom and a thin black strip at the top where the earpiece, sensors and the FaceTime camera are located.
