SoundTracking app receives major update with hashtags, song requests and more

SoundTracking, the popular social network for sharing and discovering new music, has posted a significant update to its iOS app this morning. The update, which brings the client to version 3.3.0, includes a number of new features and improvements.

Among the app's new features is hashtag support—users can now add hashtags to their posts or comments to participate in a trending topic. And with song requests and dedications, users can now ask friends what they're listening to, and send them songs...

Verizon may owe Apple $14B for unsold iPhones

Amid cooling iPhone demand, some carriers are having trouble meeting its sales commitments to Apple - and the smartphone maker is in no mood to ignore the issue. One carrier, Verizon Wireless, could be on the hook for up to $14 billion worth of unsold iPhones, one analyst told investors Thursday.

Although Verizon pledged in a 2010 agreement to buy $23.5 billion worth of Apple handsets in 2013, meeting the commitment would demand the U.S. carrier sell more than twice as many iPhones this year as in 2012...

More photos of alleged plastic iPhone shells surface

Continuing the recent flurry of alleged 'budget iPhone' shell leaks, a new set of high resolution photos of the purported part have surfaced online this morning. There's several photos actually, showing various different plastic iPhone casings in newer iPod-like colors.

For those who haven't been following the storyline, there have been a number of reports over the past several months that Apple's long-rumored, low-end iPhone is finally going to materialize this year. And the theory seems to be corroborated by several recent part leaks...

IFTTT brings its powerful automation service to the iPhone

IFTTT has been around for a while now—since 2010. The acronym stands for 'If This Then That,' which does a great job of summarizing what it does: allows users to create automation Recipes for various services using a Trigger (this) and an Action (that).

Services like Instagram and Dropbox are known as 'Channels,' and there are different Triggers and Actions associated with each. It's a cool idea, but the only way to set up these Recipes through IFTTT was via a web browser. That, however, changes today...

Facebook app updated with new icons for verified accounts and more

Facebook has posted a small update for its iOS application this afternoon, bringing the mobile client to version 6.3. The update only brings about a handful of improvements, but one of them could have major implications for the social network.

New in version 6.3 are blue check mark icons for verified accounts—similar to what you see on Twitter. This makes it easier to find pages of celebrities, public figures and brands that have been officially confirmed and authenticated by Facebook...

Wall Street prepares for flat year-over-year growth from Apple

If Wall Street was caught flat-footed by Apple's lower earnings back in April, analysts are preparing for more bad news for the third quarter. Apple is expected to announce lower quarterly revenue and sales, prompting one expert to slice thirteen percent off his previous forecast for the third quarter. Although a $5.4 billion reduction in expectations might seem dramatic, it is actually rosier than a review of what Apple may announce July 24...

Deus Ex: The Fall arrives on the App Store

Square Enix originally planned to unleash Deus Ex: The Fall on iOS tomorrow, but in a change of heart the publisher has released the game on the App Store a day early (not that we're complaining). Based on Square's Deus Ex cyberpunk franchise, the game takes place after the Deux Ex: The Icarus Effect novel. This action-based RPG is another premium triple-A release on the App Store, featuring console-grade graphics with unique design style and full-blown Deus Ex experience...

Foxconn said to be hiring workers to build next-gen iPhone

According to a new report, Foxconn—Apple's go-to manufacturing partner for many of its iOS devices—has begun hiring workers to help it produce the next-generation iPhone. A recruiting firm that works with the company has reportedly started large-scale recruitment.

The boost in hiring makes sense, as recent reports suggest that Apple has begun ramping up production of its next-gen handset ahead of what is expected to be a fall launch. We saw a similar bolster in Foxconn's workforce ahead of the iPhone 5's launch last summer...

Apple asks ITC for stay on sales ban affecting older iOS devices

Apple has asked the United States International Trade Commission (or ITC) to stay a ban on sales of older iPhone and iPads while a court considers an appeal. The company filed a motion on Monday arguing that the ban, which is the result of a Samsung patent infringement complaint, will 'sweep away an entire segment of Apple's products...'

Tumblr updates iOS app with new search and discovery features

Tumblr users will be happy to hear that the micro-blogging service has posted a new update for its iOS client. The update, which brings the app to version 3.4, includes a handful of very useful enhancements.

And all of these enhancements have to do with search and discovery. Users can now search for specific tags and blogs, or explore various trending tags and blogs, right from within the mobile Tumblr application...

iOS 7 smooths out iPhone apps on non-Retina iPads

With each passing day we learn more about the subtleties and under-the-hood tweaks that have made their way into the third beta of iOS 7. Today, I want to talk about the iPad's 2x compatibility mode. Hasn't it always bothered you how iPhone apps run pixel-doubled on your iPad mini and other non-Retina iPad devices, resulting in jagged corners and edges and just all-around pixelated appearance?

You can tick that issue off as iOS 7 Beta 3 added a new feature that makes every iPhone app look very clear running on an iPad 2 or iPad mini, in a manner reminiscent of a tweak for jailbroken devices by Ryan Petrich, called RetinaPad...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 lands in Australia and New Zealand App Stores

Good news this afternoon for those looking forward to the highly anticipated Plants vs. Zombie sequel. Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time has started hitting App Stores around the world, despite EA's warning that the game wouldn't make its July 18th deadline.

Don't get too excited though. Apparently, today's release is just a limited soft launch to help the developers fine-tune the game's new free-to-play experience. For now, only folks in Australia and New Zealand (or with iTunes accounts in either country) can download it...
