The award-winning ‘Sky Guide’ is free right now within the Apple Store app

Those of you who enjoy app deals will be interested to know that Sky Guide is available for free right now. Apple is currently offering promo codes for the award-winning star-gazer, which typically costs $1.99, within its Apple Store app.

For those who aren't familiar with it, Sky Guide is a star and constellation guide that automatically aligns itself when you hold your device up to the sky. There may be many apps like it, but none of them are more beautiful or easy to use.

Next iPhone could be even thinner and lighter thanks to smaller LED backlighting chips

In its never-ending quest of engineering ever thinner and lighter devices, Apple is said to use smaller LED backlighting chips that could, at least theoretically, make the next iPhone(s)—you guessed right— smaller and lighter.

Citing a TrendForce report, DigiTimes said Tuesday that next-generation ‘iPhone 6s’ and ‘iPhone 6s Plus’ will adopt smaller LED chips for the display's backlight unit. The new chips reportedly measure three mm wide, 0.85mm tall and 0.4mm deep versus the 3.0mm x 0.85mm x 0.6mm chips used in the present-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices.

Sony to supply 12MP camera for iPhone 6s with RGBW subpixels for better low-light photography

Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony is a longtime supplier of best-in-class mobile cameras for iPhones and iPads. That said, it's hardly a surprise that the company is now rumored to retain its role as a sole supplier of CMOS sensor for the next iPhone's back-facing iSight camera, according to fresh news reports published in the Japanese media.

While the current-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature Sony's eight-megapixel Exmor RS ISX014 sensor out the back with 1.5 Focus Pixel technology, the next iPhones are understood to incorporate a higher-resolution twelve-megapixel Sony module with RGBW subpixel technology that should improve the handsets' photography performance in low-light conditions.

TSMC establishing 10nm pilot line to build A10 chips for iPhone 7

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is apparently scheduled to finish its 10-nanometer pilot production line by the end of June, with Taiwanese media suggesting that the new facilities will churn out an Apple-designed ‘A10’ processor said to power an ‘iPhone 7’ and other iOS devices due in 2016.

NBA Jam by EA Sports selected as IGN’s free iOS game of the month

It took a little longer than usual, but IGN's free iOS game of the month is finally here. Though the promotion is valid only in the US, UK and a few select markets, readers overseas can use an anonymizer service like SmartHide Online Anonymizer to visit IGN’s deals page as if there were accessing it from within the US and redeem the game.

Released in the App Store back in February of 2011, NBA Jam by EA Sports has never been free so this is your chance to grab the game and save five bucks right off the bat.

Pac-Man receives big update, goes on sale for 35th anniversary

It may be hard to believe, but Pac-Man is celebrating its 35th birthday this weekend. The popular pellet-gobbling arcade game made its debut 35 years ago on May 22, 1980 (it launched first in Japan, and then Midway brought it to the US in October).

Unsurprisingly, Bandai Namco is going above and beyond to honor the anniversary. It's hosting a party in Chicago with the creator of Pac-Man Professor Toru Iwatani tonight, and it's pushed out an update and discount for the iOS port of the game.

25 amazing apps and games are currently on sale for $0.99

Apple this week launched a new promotion in the App Store called 'Amazing Apps & Games for $0.99.' The curated section highlights 12 great apps and 13 popular games, which normally run between $2 and $6, that are currently on sale for less than a buck.

Among the offerings are the endless snowboarder Alto's Revenge, and premium creative apps like Procreate Pocket and Enlight. Many of these have already been mentioned in our App Recap, but we thought the deals were worth compiling into a single post.

New book tells the story of how the iPhone crippled BlackBerry

There is a new book coming out later this month entitled "Losing the Signal," and it explores the rise and fall of BlackBerry. The Canadian-based handset maker that once sat atop the smartphone market has spent the last two years fighting off bankruptcy.

On Friday The Wall Street Journal published an interesting excerpt from the book, which tells the story of the iPhone's debut in 2007 and how it impacted folks inside BlackBerry. It's clear that they had no idea it was coming, or what they could do to respond.

How to make Apple Watch play nice with your iPhone on a 5Ghz Wi-Fi network

Although not quite new, we reported this morning that Apple Watch can't connect to a 5Ghz Wi-Fi network. It's not a bug or anything. It's just a limitation of the current hardware found in Apple Watch. For those users that are not aware of this limitation, it can cause problems when believing that because you are on a known Wi-Fi network, Apple Watch and iPhone should still be able to connect even if they're out of Bluetooth range.

There is just no way to make your Apple Watch connect to a 5Ghz Wi-Fi network, but there are ways to work around that limitation. I've actually been helping people with that specific issue for a few days now, and because I've seen misinformation going around, I thought it would be best to just get things cleared up and explain how you can have both your iPhone and Apple Watch play nice with each other, even if your iPhone is connected to a 5Ghz network.

Take a sneak peek at Spotify’s new experience with Running, activity-based playlists and more

An iDownloadBlog reader has sent in a number of gorgeous screenshots of Spotify's major iPhone revamp. The software was just released to Spotify's beta testers a few hours ago ahead of its impending public release.

You may have heard Spotify stepped on Apple's toes with the announcement of new media types like news, video and podcasts, along with a flurry of feature additions like activity-based playlists, a cool Running feature and more.

With that in mind, we urge you to take a look at the screenshots included below and see for yourself how the new Spotify experience on mobile looks like.

Catalyst Waterproof case protects your iPhone 6 up to 16 feet under water

When I go camping, I tend to leave my iPhone behind. Not because I'm trying to be closer to nature, or unplug from the world, but because I tend to worry about getting dirt, marshmallow goo, ash, or beer on my device. Even if I'm brave enough to bring it to the campsite, I still won't take it anywhere near a body of water.

The Catalyst Waterproof iPhone case eases my fears by having a waterproof rating up to 16.4 feet deep. Plus the lanyard connector means I can secure my iPhone to my body for even more security and protection.
