Analyst: iPhone 6 design locked down, specs include 4.8″ screen, 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Apple has apparently decided on the design of its next iPhone and specifications are said to include a 4.8-inch display, according to an analyst with Cowen and Company who must have been following our non-scientific poll which had the majority of respondents opt for a 4.7-inch form factor.

The phone should additionally include the latest 802.11ac networking, also known as Gigabit Wi-Fi, for three times greater wireless transfer speeds. Apple currently supports Gigabit Wi-Fi in the recently refreshed AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule wireless appliances and across its Mac Pro, MacBook and iMac families...

Poll: what screen size should the iPhone 6 be?

Two years ago, our iPhones were all 3.5-inch. It was a time when jumbo-sized handsets had started to steal Apple's thunder as a bunch of people responded enthusiastically to bigger smartphones from the Android camp, namely, Samsung.

Our non-scientific poll asked you back in May 2012 whether the then-unreleased iPhone 5 should rock a bigger screen. More than four out of each ten respondents voted for a four-inch display being the new gold standard for iPhones going forward.

But a lot has happened in the past eighteen months. Fast forward to today and all of a sudden what seemed preposterous in 2012 is commonly accepted in 2014.

The line between a smartphone and a phablet is now blurred to the point where a lot of Apple fans have taken notice of these oversized handsets and are now demanding that Apple responds to the trend accordingly.

The rumor-mill is adamant that Tim Cook will further diversify Apple's mobile product portfolio in 2014 by commissioning a 12.9-inch iPad alongside larger-screened iPhones. Taking it all in, what screen size the next iPhone should be, do you think?

New display panels in development could hint at larger iPhone, iPad and iWatch

If you've been watching the rumor mill over the last 6 months or so, you know that 2014 is expected to be huge for Apple. It's believed that both the iPhone and iPad will receive larger displays this year, and the highly anticipated iWatch could drop as early as this fall.

The highly-regarded NPD DisplaySearch added to the speculation this morning, issuing a new research note saying that its supply chain sources are tracking new display sizes with various resolutions in development that could be used in some of Apple's new devices...

Rumor: TSMC to start churning out Touch IDs for the next iPhone this summer

According to industry sources, Apple has seemingly commissioned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to build Touch ID fingerprint sensors for a next-generation iPhone, dubbed by the press the iPhone 6.

The manufacture of the sensors should start in the second quarter of 2014 at TSMC's twelve-inch fab, using the company's 65-nanometer process, according to a report the Asian industry publication DigiTimes filed on Tuesday...

Pegatron expected to land half of Apple’s iPhone 6 orders

For it only being January, there sure has been a lot of information tossed about regarding the next-gen iPhone. Insiders claim to know what size the display will be, what kind of camera it'll have, and even who is going to make it.

A new report out of Taiwan this afternoon is claiming that Pegatron will likely be tapped to manufacture half of Apple's [so-called] iPhone 6 orders—a huge win for the Taiwanese supplier, who currently assembles the iPhone 5c...

iPhone 6 said to feature 8MP camera again with improved image stabilization

Although the iPhone 5s has only been out for about 4 months now, next-gen iPhone rumors are already ramping up. The handset, believed (for right now, anyway) to be called the iPhone 6, has been widely reported to feature a larger display and other improvements.

Today, a new report from China adds to the chatter by claiming that Apple's next smartphone should see some camera improvements such as enhanced optical image stabilization. It also calls for the handset to retain the current 8-megapixel sensor for its iSight camera...

Supposed iPhone 6 frame leaks: it’s ultra-thin and not very Apple-like

The notoriously unreliable Digitimes last month called for a larger size iPhone in May and today Chinese website Huanqiu reiterated that an iPhablet would arrive in time for the next Galaxy S smartphone confirmed for May 2014.

The next iPhone - let's call it the iPhone 6 for the convenience sake - is generally thought to come in two sizes, one 4.7-inch and the larger one with a phablet-grade screen measuring a whopping 5.7 inches diagonally.

And now, images of an alleged frame have appeared online to suggest a notably thinner appearance compared to the current-generation iPhone 5s. Could this part be genuine? My two cents are right below...

Apple again reported to be working on iPhones with 4.7 and 5.7-inch displays

Since just before Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s last September, we've been hearing rumors that the company's eighth-generation handset is going to feature a larger display. Reports are calling for sizes from 4.8-inches all the way up to 6-inches.

But there's also another theory—first started by Reuters last June—going around that Apple is working on two larger screen iPhone models: one with a 4.7-inch display and one with a 5.7-inch display. And a new report out of China adds to the mix...

New rumor calls for 12.9-inch iPad in October 2014, iPhablet in May 2014

A new rumor out from Taiwan alleges that Apple will release a large form-factor iPad with a screen measuring 12.9 inches diagonally in October of next year, primarily aimed at the education market. The next iPhone, the one with a larger screen compared to today's four-inch iPhone 5s/5c, is apparently scheduled to go on sale in May 2014.

I'm not buying the May release date because Apple has never released an iPhone in May. Besides, this would break Apple's tradition of releasing new iPhones in Fall, the practice Tim Cook established with the iPhone 4s introduction on October 4, 2011...

iPhone 5s rules Google’s 2013 phone searches

Google's Zeitgeist has become something of an annual tradition as the Internet giant wraps up each year by giving us a glimpse into what the world's been searching for using its search engine. Surprisingly (or not?), Apple's iPhone 5s took the top three slots in global search trends (#5 in the U.S.), behind Nelson Mandela and Paul Walker.

Google’s review of 2013 searches also shows the iPhone 5s leading 2013 search trends in the Phones category, although it's been edged out in the Gadgets category by Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Sony's PlayStation 4...

Concept video imagines what the iPhone 6 could be

Things have started to get out of hand very quickly with iPhone concepts over the last few months, so we decided to slow down our coverage of them. As a matter of fact, I don't believe we've published one iPhone concept since last June.

Today we're making an exception for this iPhone 6 concept by Arthur Reis...

Rumor: Apple now testing 4.9-inch iPhone 6 and iPhone 5c successor

A Chinese blog that leaked a few credible Apple parts earlier in the year is out with a new report that's making the rounds this morning. Apparently, Apple has begun testing upcoming iPhone models with larger screens that go beyond the current four-inch form factor the company inaugurated with the iPhone 5 release a year ago. A large-screen iPhone 6 was mulled before, but this is the first time anyone mentioned an iPhone 5c successor adopting a bigger screen as well.

On the flip side, it's impossible to take these reports at face value. These things are often misinterpreted and even Tim Cook bothered to urge people not to read too much into such a complex beast as Apple's supply chain. Moreover, it goes without saying that Apple is constantly experimenting with various form factors, which could explain these rumors...
