GeoHot Reveals BlackRa1n iPad Jailbreak

Things are going fast in the jailbreak world these days. One day after MuscleNerd announced the Dev Team had jailbroken iPhone OS 4, it's GeoHot turns to impress us with a jailbreak for the iPad.

Ealier today, GeoHot posted a tweet with a picture showing verbose mode running on his iPad. For info, verbose mode basically shows everything that your iPad is doing on bootup. It's a clear sign that the iPad has been jailbroken.

As if it wasn't clear enough, GeoHot posted a more straightforward picture on his blog minutes ago showing a jailbroken iPad with the BlackRa1n and Cydia icons.

When the picture was first posted on GeoHot's blog, it had a caption under it saying that "The new app will not be called blackra1n". This caption has since then been removed.

The name doesn't matter. Of course what really matters here is that GeoHot is once again the first to find a new jailbreak, this time for the iPad.

There is no estimated release date but if I had a guess, I'd say that this new iPad jailbreak should hit the streets pretty soon. It seems like multitasking might come to the iPad earlier than Steve Jobs would want to after all...

How to Turn Your iPhone Into An iPad Camera

It's too bad that a great device like the iPad doesn't have a camera. Fortunately, there's an app that will turn your iPhone into an iPad camera. It's not the perfect solution, but it should do the job...

All you need to use your iPhone as a camera for iPad is the Camera for iPad app. After installing the app on your iPad and iPhone, simply launch it on both devices and they will find each other via Bluetooth. Your iPad will then show what your iPhone camera is seeing.

Intuitive controls let you zoom with a pinch or rotate with a swipe. You can just tap the button to take a high resolution photo that is saved onto your iPad.

Camera for iPad isn't just for the iPad! You can connect an iPhone to an iPod Touch, or even connect one iPhone to another, and choose which is the sender and which is the receiver.

Camera for iPad is available from the App Store for $0.99. While I haven't personally tried the app, MichaelB who tipped me on this confirms it works like a charm.

iPad Jailbreak Video

It didn't take too long for  the jailbreak community to come up with a jailbreak for the iPad. Last week I told you about Spirit, a jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.3, and today, MuscleNerd confirmed the iPad jailbreak using a variation of Spirit, originally developed by Comex.

Even better news is that this jailbreak can also be applied to every platform including the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, and potentially to the iPad 3G.

Credit goes where it's due. This iPad jailbreak is a cross-team effort by @chronicdevteam, @comex, @chpwn, and the Dev Team.

If you were on the fence about buying an iPad, this might just be the reason you were looking for.

There is no estimated release date for this jailbreak. My guess is that these smart hackers will wait for iPhone OS 3.2, so Apple doesn't patch the firmware and render this jailbreak useless.

How exciting!

My Thoughts On The iPad On Release Day

I'm usually up this early for work so it was no sweat for me to get up at 3:00 a.m. and have breakfast with a group of Twitter enthusiasts to get the new Apple iPad.  I was one of the few people in the group who was actually not sold on the iPad.  I have an iPhone.  Why do I need an iPad?  I listened to Steve Jobs and watched Apple's series of videos but nothing so far convinced me to buy one.  I knew I had to have it in my hands to know if I really could use one.  So, I tagged along.

Apple employees were willing to let me try the device even though I told them I had no intention of buying it.

Unfortunately the Wi-Fi at the Apple Store I was at in Hawaii was so flooded I couldn't use apps on the iPad that needed the internet and I couldn't browse Safari.  But, there was still plenty to check out.

I immediately wanted to try a racing game and the iPad I was using had Real Racing HD [iTunes link].  I actually didn't like Real Racing on the iPhone and preferred other racing apps like Asphalt 5.  I found the learning curve to be tougher.  But, on the iPad I quickly learned how to drive well.  I didn't even read the instructions so I didn't even use the brakes.  Plus, the more recent racing games are notorious for slow loading (especially on the iPhone 3G) but the iPad handled the game with ease.

Another highlight:  Pianist Pro [iTunes link].  I know how to play a variety of instruments including the piano.  And the iPhone has been almost worthless when it comes to simulating a real instrument.  But, Pianist Pro comes pretty darn close to at least a workable toy keyboard.  The touchscreen was sensitive enough to handle the chords and arpeggios I threw at it.  A drum machine is built-in.  There's a dual keyboard mode for playing both the left hand and the right hand notes.  The only real drawback to the app is that the white keys will only trigger when hit below the black keys making a chord like A-flat a little harder.  Pianists and keyboardists will know what I'm talking about.  If that can be fixed, it would be a near-perfect piano app for the iPad.

My favorite new native feature is the ability to use your photos as an animated picture frame when your iPad is locked.  It's called Picture Frame.  Use it and love it.

I'm definitely a lot more intrigued by the iPad now that I had a chance to have one in my hands.  If I do get one,  I'm more inclined to use the iPad at home and use my iPhone when I'm out on the road.  If I do get an iPad I would rather get the 3G version so when I go on trips I'll always have the internet.  Family that I visit in the continental U.S. doesn't have Wi-Fi.  I can just activate the unlimited 3G for that month since there is no contract required.

Leave a comment to let us know what you think about the iPad after trying it out.

Poll: Did You Preorder Your iPad?

I'm just curious to see if any of you actually preordered an iPad. I didn't for the simple reason that I'm currently out of the country. I think I will buy my iPad in France when going there in a couple of months.

Did You Preorder Your iPad?opinion

My Thoughts About the iPad

After giving you 17 reasons why the iPad sucks and 499 why you should buy one, I wanted to share with you what I really think about the iPad.

Underwhelming is the word

All throughout Steve Jobs' presentation of the iPad, I was waiting for the time I would be amazed and excited. Jobs always does a great job at giving me the chills for his products but this time, he failed to.

When the presentation was over, I really felt underwhelmed. I thought to myself: is this it? There had to be something I had missed. Some feature I had overlooked. No, that was really it.

Apple had failed to create excitement.

Netbook > iPad

Steve Jobs made it pretty clear that the iPad aimed at taking over the netbook market. However, I'm not convinced the iPad is better than a netbook at all. To be honest with you, I even felt offended when Steve Jobs called netbooks "cheap laptops". I am currently traveling with a netbook right now, and there is no way a giant iPod Touch would be half as useful as my netbook is. Really.

If all you do is going to Facebook and check emails, then yes, get an iPad because it will do that just flawlessly for you. However, if you're looking for a mobile device from which you can actually work (ie. save documents, create documents, extensive typing, video chat, etc...), then I believe a netbook still is your best bet.

I am not Apple's target market

I've come to the conclusion that I don't know who the iPad really is for. It is not for me, I know that. I am a computer power user. I need multitasking, I need Flash, I need to be able to save documents to my hard drive. But I might be blinded by how I see the perfect tech gadget, and what I believe is good for me probably is far from what Mom and Pops think is good for them.

If my Mom told me she wanted an iPad, I would gently explain to her that it might not be a good idea for the time being and that she might as well buy a $400 Lenovo netbook because she'll get much more out of it. The problem is that my Mom will be so excited about owning a device with a fruit on it that she probably won't listen to me anyways.

The iPad might be targeting these people: those who don't know enough, thus can be easily influenced by good marketing campaigns.

Do I NEED or do I WANT an iPad?

The reason why I'm so confused about this new device is probably because I haven't used it yet, but also because Apple hasn't managed to make it clear why I need an iPad. Apple is usually great at making me NEED things. 3 years ago, I was very happy with my BlackBerry Pearl, then Apple shows up with the iPhone. They made me NEED it, instantly. This has been also true for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Apple doesn't make me need an iPad right now. It hasn't hit the spot yet!

Will I buy an iPad?

Yes, I will buy an iPad. The main reason is that if I'm going to blog about it, I'd better know my stuff. It might also be convenient at night to check Twitter or my emails while watching TV on the couch. I'm a news junkie and I admit that an iPad will be much better to read the news from my RSS reader, which I usually do from my iPhone.

Oh and one more thing, my fiancee is very excited too, for slightly different reasons though. Here is what she said to me: "I think playing Bejeweled on this giant screen is gonna be awesome". She had a point. I started dreaming about landing giant planes on Flight Control, one of my favorite games, on this big iPad screen. Haha!

The future of the iPad

This is just the beginning. What Apple is giving us today has nothing to do with what they will give us in 3-4 years. They could very well give us all we want right now (more storage, Flash, video camera, etc...), but they have to start somewhere. They have to work on us and create the need for an iPad. This will take time but I am convinced that once Apple really unleashes the power of the iPad, it will be one of the most amazing and useful device ever made.

On the bright side, I know the Dev Team will be working day and night to jailbreak the iPad. Once they find an exploit and can inject their codes in there, the iPad will be on its way to kicking ass.

What's your point of view?

499 Reasons to Buy an iPad

Since it was unveiled last week, there has been no shortage of reactions on why the iPad might just fail and how underwhelming this new product really is. I myself took a good stab at it and trashed the iPad with my list of 17 reasons why the iPad sucks.

After torching the iPad, I wanted to come up with an article praising it and showing what a great device it will be. The reality is that it is much harder for me to find compelling reasons to buy the iPad than it is to not buy one. So I forced myself and came up with these reasons to buy an iPad.

It's cool. You know it! having anything branded Apple is cool It's going to kick ass as an eReader (that's at least what everyone thinks) The gaming experience will be awesome It comes with 140,000+ applications The big screen equipped with multitouch. Like the iPhone, but better because it's bigger! The battery life is (supposedly) great It's carrier unlocked. You can potentially use it on any network There is no contract for the 3G plan (at least here in the US) 3G plan is actually cheap External keyboard support It will soon be jailbroken Priced at $499, it gives you 499 reasons to buy an iPad

That's everything I can come up with. If you're not an iPad hater, I'd like to hear your reasons why you'd want to buy an iPad. Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

I Told You So! This is How Much I Was Right About the iPad

A few days ago I wrote an article about my predictions for Apple's event and the launch of the iPad. While everybody was busy spreading rumors, I preferred telling what I thought was going to happen.

In this article, I'd like to quickly go over my 5 predictions and how much I was right (or wrong in one case).

1. I was right about the name

I told you that there was no way Apple would ever call it iSlate. While I didn't say it was going to be called iPad (even though I did mention the name), I went against mainstream blogs who believed it was going to be called the iSlate.

2. I was right about the OS

People were trashing me on Twitter for being so "naive" because I didn't think we would be introduced to OS 4.0. I was right when I said that the tablet would originally run OS 3.2. Come on people, it's just good common sense! The top seller is still the iPhone and they can't spoil June's new iPhone announcement for a new product like the iPad.

3. I was right about the launch date

Unlike many people, I predicted that the tablet wouldn't be available right away. I was right when I said it wouldn't be available for a few month (I went as far as saying it would be April, although this wasn't part of the prediction). Why it makes sense? Just good marketing sense: iPhones come out in July, iPods come out in September, I don't know about that but I'm sure Apple has something going out in December, and now they have something in March/April. Every quarter they have new products coming out. Enough to keep their marketing peeps busy all year long.

4. I was almost right about the network

I am mad at myself on this one. I listened to my heart when I should have listened to my head. If you read my predictions, I was very hesitant to take a stance on this. I chose Verizon because I thought it would make sense marketing-wise. Now that I think about it, it was stupid of me not to pick AT&T because it does make lots of sense (GSM > CDMA).

5. I was right about the iPhone and AT&T

The rumors went wild that AT&T would lose the iPhone's exclusivity. Again, I went against everybody else and not only did I predict we wouldn't hear anything about the iPhone, but I also said that AT&T would remain the iPhone's exclusive carrier.

I told you that if I were right about these predictions, I would be in your face. So here I am :)

If you want more predictions from me, you may want to check my 10 predictions for the iPhone in 2010.

By the way, I expect apologies from those of you who called me stupid on Twitter. Just kidding. Call me anything you want, but don't call me wrong!

16 Reasons the iPad Sucks

The iPad sucks! That's what I said to myself after watching Steve Jobs reveal what was said to be the most important device of his career. I felt let down! I expected so much more from this tablet. Maybe I expected too much from it. The iPhone has set the bar so high that we are now used to being amazed and surprised by Apple. This announcement sure was a reality check!

The general opinion about the iPad is not as good as good as Apple probably expected. I ran a poll yesterday on the blog (take it if you haven't yet). The majority of you was pretty disappointed and didn't even think they would buy an iPad when it's for sale in a couple months.

There is no shortage of reasons why the iPad sucks. Let's go over some of them here.

The name sucks! The first thing my fiancee told me about the iPad? "Honey, I think I'm getting my iPeriod, do you have an iPad for me?" It doesn't take a marketing genius to figure out that the iPad is a terrible name for a product. I plan to write a blog post about the worst jokes ever about the iPad so if you have some funny ones, please email them to me.

The network sucks! While I personally don't have any problem with AT&T, most people don't agree with me, so I guess it's fair to say that sticking with AT&T was not the right decision for Apple. They could have gone with T-Mobile, or Verizon (even though I think the iPad or iPhone will never ever go to Verizon) and everybody would be happy. Apple is not a company that aims at making people happy though. It aims at making Steve happy!

No Flash! Alex of Applicious says it all: No Flash on the iPhone was barely tolerable. On a device that you call Internet-specific to not have Flash is more than annoying, it's insulting. Flash, love it or hate it, is one huge slice of the Internet. This is not optional.

No multitasking! During his presentation of the iPad, Steve Jobs called netbook cheap laptops. Guess what Steve, I might have a "cheap laptop" but I'm currently typing this post on it with 2 Firefox windows opened, TweetDeck, a Word Document and Flickr Uploader running at the same time. Can your iPad do that? Netbooks are fulfilling a need. The iPad is not. It's just struggling to create a one. Not having multitasking on the iPad really sucks.

No camera! If you're going to create a mobile device for Mom and Pops, you'd better give it at least a front facing camera because Mom sure loves to Skype her daughter. I didn't expect a back-facing camera on the iPad, but I sure hoped for a front-facing one.

It's big! Of course it's big, it's the purpose of it. Still, I'm confused. Does Apple have to license plus-size pockets as an official iPad accessory?

It's heavy! At 1.5 Lbs, I don't think you're gonna be able to hold this baby for 2 hours without developing a tendinitis.

No Video Output! If you thought about plugging your iPad in your TV to watch a slideshow of your latest vacation's pictures, then think again because it's not going to happen.

It's not pretty! Let's be honest for a minute, the big fat bezel around the touchscreen is ugly.

The keyboard sucks! I didn't expect the iPad to have a physical keyboard but that won't prevent me from complaining about it. I hate typing on my iPhone and something tells me I'll hate typing on the iPad even more because it simply isn't convenient. When I type on a keyboard, I like to have the screen facing me, not laying down flat because it is unpractical and in the long run, it will most likely cause pain in the neck and back (I'm serious).

No USB port! Did you want to plug your digital camera into your iPad to download your pictures. Too bad. Oh wait, you'll actually be able to if you buy the $30 adapter Apple will be selling. That is mafia-style racketing.

No 16:9! Watching movies on the iPad is going to suck as it will render the movies in 4:3 aspect ratio with big black bars around it.

No Widgets! Ok, the iPad screen is huge but it actually feels empty. Why don't we have widgets on this thing? Sticky notes, calculator, whatever widget?

The battery sucks! I don't believe Apple when they say the iPad has a battery life of 10 hours. They were praising the iPhone 3GS battery. I still can't get through the day without plugging mine in. Play NFS on your iPad for one hour, do a little bit of web browsing for 2 hours, and I bet you your battery will be dead before you can update your Facebook status.

The storage limitation sucks! Starting at 16GB, this is a complete joke. If you want me to store my music, videos and photos on your iPad (all this in top of my applications), I'm going to need MUCH more space than the 64GB limit.

Reading books on the iPad sucks! The Kindle might not be dead yet after all. I dare you to read a book on your iPad for more than 2 hours. By that time, your eyes will be crying, you'll most likely have a headache and feel tired. That's what computer screen do to you. I'm not a big fan of ebooks (I like the smell and feel of books - call me old school) but I do believe the e-ink feature of the Kindle is much better than what we'll get on the iPad.

What do you think? Do you think Apple underdelivered with the iPad? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Poll: What Do You Think About The iPad?

In my overview of the iPad yesterday, I said that I was not impressed by this new tablet. To me the iPad is nothing more than a giant iPod Touch with very few (if any) features that would make me get the line on launch day. That doesn't mean I don't see potential in it. That also doesn't mean I won't buy one...

There were some interesting comments on my iPad coverage but I'd like to go further and try to "quantify" your feelings about it. I created 2 mini polls that should take about 30 seconds of your time. Please tell us what you think about the iPad and whether or not you plan to buy one.

If you'd like to share your thoughts more in details, please feel free to leave a comment.

Everything You Need to Know About the iPad

As usual, Apple event started with Steve Jobs throwing some big numbers in our face: 250 million iPods sold, 284 retail stores that saw over 250 million visitors, 140,000 apps, 3 billion applications downloaded, all this wrapped in some exciting adjectives such as "amazing", "exciting", "wonderful", "phenomenal", "incredible", etc... Uncle Steve sure knows how to warm up a crowd!

Let's cut to the chase. Here is everything you need to know about the iPad.
