Google’s Hangouts app is now iPhone 6-ready

Continuing its string of app updates adding native support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus screen sizes, Google on Wednesday issued a small update to its Hangouts messaging software for the iPhone and iPad, which now looks as you'd expect on the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 screens.

In addition to UI support for the new Apple smartphones, Hangouts 2.3 contains no other additions or improvements. The app is available free of charge in the App Store and requires iOS 6.0 or later.

Rovio’s Flappy Bird-inspired Retry launches globally

After soft-launching its retro-style arcade flying game inspired by the Flappy Bird craze in Canada, Finland and Poland, Retry by Rovio is now available internationally.

Released under Rovio's LVL 11 experimental label for internal games which don’t quite fit the overall Rovio brand, the addictive free-to-play download will have you thinking that “you’ve stepped into an 8-bit time machine and gone back to 1986″.

Early iPad Air 2 reviews praise display, performance

Right after its iPad event on Thursday, Apple gave a select group of journalists early access to its two new tablets— the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3—for early review. Tonight, a number of those reviews hit the web, offering up initial feedback on the two devices.

Reviews for the new iPad mini seem pretty dull, given how similar it is to its predecessor, but reviewers had some interesting things to say about the iPad Air 2. So, as usual, we've rounded up some excerpts from Air 2 reviews to give you an idea of the consensus.

Another official Pokemon game has landed in the App Store

The Pokemon Company today released its second official game for iOS called Camp Pokemon. Aimed at kids between 6 and 8 years of age, the title takes place on an immersive island filled with various mini games that teach players what it takes to become a Pokemon trainer.

Completing each of these activities will net players a pin, which they can view later in their Pin Book, allowing them to track their progress. They can also collect stickers, which can then be used to decorate photos taken with either iPhone or iPad cameras from within the game.

IMDb app adds box office info, movie tech specs and a couple other features

Amazon-owned IMDb, the world’s largest collection of movie, TV and celebrity information, has a nicely done iPhone and iPad application available for free in the App Store that has just gotten a whole lot better in the latest version 4.5 release.

For starters, the software at last provides a bunch of useful technical specifications for movies such as the original aspect ratio, color, audio, runtime and what not.

Next, movie pages now include box office information giving you yet another indication of the movie's popularity — that's in addition to the previous data like review scores. Note that U.S. box office result data was previously available only via the app's Popular Charts feature.

If you want to write a plot for an obscure movie that lacks descriptions, or maybe add interesting trivia to a television show, you can now do so directly in the mobile app, without visiting IMDb's interface on the web.

You can now stream every episode of The Simpsons to iPhone and iPad

In line with expectations, FX has activated the Simpsons World portal in its FX Now application this afternoon. Authenticated users get access to a deep catalog of content, including, for the first time ever, on-demand access to all 552 episodes of The Simpsons television show.

Simpsons World will be available on various platforms, such as the FXNOW app for iPhone, iPad, Android, Xbox, Apple TV, and of course SimpsonsWorld.com. At the time of this writing, the portal was not showing up on Apple TV, but it did appear within the iOS FX Now app.

Google adds ‘Incoming’ view and more to Docs, Sheets and Slides for iPhone and iPad

Google is on a roll today.

Minutes after issuing an updated Play Music client for iOS with a revamped Listen Now interface, mood or activity based radio station search and other goodies, the search monster announced Tuesday that updates to its Docs, Sheets and Slides trio of mobile productivity applications are now available in the App Store, featuring an all-new “Incoming” view to see all of the files that have been shared with you and a few other enhancements.

For example, the Docs editor now plays nice with external keyboards.

“We also know that it’s important to you to be able to make documents look as polished as possible, wherever you’re editing, so in Docs you can now apply headings and use shortcuts when you’re typing with Bluetooth keyboards,” the team noted.

T-Mobile to begin offering iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 for $0 down

Folks looking to score a new iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 without having to pay a lot of money upfront will be happy to hear that T-Mobile has announced that it will soon begin offering the new tablets under its equipment installment plan.

Starting tomorrow, qualified Simple Choice customers will be able to pre-order a Cellular + Wi-Fi iPad mini 3 for as little as $0 down and $22.08 per month for two years, or a Cellular + Wi-Fi iPad Air 2 for $0 down and $26.24/month.

Google Play Music updated with revamped Listen Now, mood or activity based search and more

After refreshing Google Plays Newsstand for iOS yesterday with native display support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Internet giant Google on Tuesday pushed an update to another app, its Play Music client for the iPhone and iPad.

Taking a page from Betas Music's book, the new version of Google Play Music, available free in the App Store, enables mood or activity based search for radio stations. Jogging? Good, use the 'Running' tag to find music that matches your activity. Holding a party? The related 'Partying' should come in handy.

And because this is Google, they even let you search for 'Feeling Happy' radio stations. Other new features and enhancements are briefly mentioned right after the break.

Infuse 3 out with iPhone 6 support, AirDrop sharing, dark theme and dozens of improvements

Jailbreak developer FireCore has made a name for himself with the aTV Flash Black software that supercharges the $99 Apple TV media streamer. But he's also behind Infuse, an excellent app that brings support for a plethora of audio and video file formats to iOS, no conversion needed.

Apps like Infuse are a big deal because Apple's mobile operating system does not support “foreign” media formats out of the box. Following the initial Infuse release on April 30 of last year and Infuse 2 last December, here comes Infuse 3, probably the biggest update thus far.

Infuse 3 supports iOS 8 as well as the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus display sizes and contains other perks that round out the feature set quite nicely. And it's especially timely given that VLC for iOS got removed recently from the App Store for legal reasons, again!

So what else is new in Infuse 3? Read on for the full reveal.

Twitterrific adds enhanced search, iOS 8 Share sheet support and more

Twitterrific 5 by Iconfactory, a freemium Twitter client which last month added 1Password integration and other enhancements, on Tuesday saw another refresh expanding on its compelling feature set.

Twitterrific 5.8 is now available in the App Store and includes support for native sharing via multi-purpose iOS 8 Share Sheets, to just about any service that has advertised its Share Extension to the system. Jump past the fold to learn about other improvements.

Apple releases iOS 8.1 with Apple Pay, Camera Roll, Text Message Forwarding and more

As promised, Apple on Monday released iOS 8.1 for public consumption. Users who have an older version installed on their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad can now update to the latest software over-the-air, by choosing Software Update under Settings > General.

iOS 8.1 flips the switch on Apple Pay in the United States on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the newly released iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

It also re-enables the missing Camera Roll album in Photos and beta iCloud Photo Library (in beta) while bringing additional Continuity features like Text Message Forwarding between iOS 8 devices and Yosemite Macs and more.
