Initial pre-order stock of black 16GB iPad mini gone

Bad news for folks who haven't pre-ordered their iPad mini yet, it looks like the initial stock of all of the entry-level models are gone. White versions sold out shortly after pre-orders began Friday morning, and black 16GB minis sold out today.

This means that if you are hoping to score one of the aforementioned tablets on launch day, you'll have to head to your local Apple Store...

Apple’s Schiller on new iMacs without an optical drive, iPad mini value

Like his boss Tim Cook, Apple's head honcho of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller is doing some explaining these days. After the iPad mini arrived and surprised folks who've been holding their breath for a $199 iPad, he sat with Reuters to explain that Apple doesn't know how to make a $199 tablet that isn't a piece of junk.

Today, he defends the device's $329 starting price in an interview with TIME. He also explains why Apple ignored netbooks and how the company, after seven generations of the iMac, came about dropping a built-in optical drive on the revamped lineup and what it means for the future of computing...

Android grabs 41 percent of tablet market as Apple’s share falls

Can the iPad mini save Apple's slipping lead in tablet sales? The could be the question of the day as researchers announce Apple's share of the tablet market dropped to 56.7 percent while Android tablets now account for 41 percent of the worldwide market.

According to Strategy Analytics, the iPad's lead eroded from the 64.5 percent it held during the third quarter of 2011. Meanwhile, an army of Android tablets, helped by Apple losses, rose to 41.3 percent of the market, up from 29.2 percent during the same period last year...

Cook on iPad mini canibalization, Microsoft’s Surface and Apple’s position on tweener tablets

Apple CEO Tim Cook during yesterday's conference call with Wall Street analysts briefly touched on Microsoft's Surface tablet, which hit store shelves today, canibalization of its own products by the iPad mini and more. He also addressed his predecessor's public dissing of smaller tablets two years ago, insisting that Apple's position on the matter remains unchanged and stressing that the iPad mini, which has a 7.9-inch display, is "in a whole different league" than other seven inchers. Apple in fact, he said, "would never make" a seven-inch iPad...

Initial pre-order stock of white iPad mini sold out

Apple made the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini available for pre-order earlier this morning. And as pointed out by some of our readers, the white version of the smaller tablet sold out rather quickly.

Here in the US, all models of the white iPad mini started showing two week shipping estimates within the first half hour. So if you're looking to score one on launch day, you'll have to head to a retail store...

Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer defend iPad mini pricing

You had to know this was coming: during the Q&A portion of Apple's conference call yesterday, analysts grilled Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer about the higher-than-expected pricing on the iPad mini.

As you would expect, the two defended the tablet's $329 price tag, stating that they didn't want to build a small, cheap tablet. "iPad mini is a fantastic product; it's not a compromise like the other 7-inch tablets."

Fourth gen iPad and iPad mini now available for pre-order

Here it is folks, the moment you've been waiting for since Apple unveiled the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini at its big media event on Tuesday. Both tablets are now available for pre-order.

As you may recall, the initial round of iPhone 5 pre-orders sold out within the first hour of availability. So if you're thinking about getting one of the new iPads, you might not want to wait...

iDownloadBlog is giving away an iPad mini

After months of rumors and leaks, the iPad mini was finally unveiled. Bigger than an iPod touch, yet smaller than a full size iPad, the mini is set to be Apple's most successful product for the holiday season. While the iPad mini will be available on November 2nd in many countries, we suspect supplies might be limited, and chances are Apple might not be able to make them fast enough to meet the demand.

Because we want to make sure you spend the holidays with an iPad mini, we decided to give one away to one lucky reader...

Low touch screen yields blamed for the iPad mini’s price tag

With so many people seemingly disappointed that the iPad mini starts at $329 rather than $249 or even $199, we polled you ahead of the announcement on the price and only seven percent thought only Apple could get away with pricing the device at $329. And yesterday, in another poll more than forty percent said they would be getting one (more than half would opt for the entry-level WiFi-only model).

No question some people will go for a Nexus 7 or Amazon's Kindle Fire because not everyone can afford a $300+ tablet. But why exactly Apple didn't make a sub-$300 iPad? According to supply chain sources, low yields for touch screens are to blame...

Poll: which iPad mini will you be pre-ordering?

Apple, as you know, starts taking pre-orders for the iPad mini tomorrow, October 26, through its online store in 26 different countries. Friday the following week, WiFi-only models are scheduled to land simultaneously on store shelves in 34 countries around the world with the WiFi + Cellular model arriving "a couple of weeks after the WiFi models", according to Apple.

You can place your pre-order for any iPad mini model, either cellular or WiFi-only, at midnight tonight. The device will also be available in the United States on carriers AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. The 16GB WiFi version starts at $329. The more capacious models each cost a $100 more than the previous one.

Want 4G LTE capability? That's a $130 extra versus its WiFi-only counterpart. So, which iPad mini is you?

LG Display beats Samsung handily for Apple display orders

According to a new supply chain report, LG Display beat its arch-rival Samsung for display panel orders and has now become the primary supplier of screens that Apple uses to build virtually all of its recently refreshed products.

Specifically, LG Display is said to provide panels for the new iPad mini, fourth-generation iPad with Retina display, 13-inch MacBook Pro and both 21.5 and 27-inch revamped iMac models. This is of particular interest to would-be shoppers eyeing the iPad mini because "frustrated suppliers", per one analyst, previously had issues meeting Apple's exacting standards...

Always quick to exploit everything Apple as an inspiration for his late-night talk show, Conan O'Brien took Apple's charming piano commercial for the new iPad mini and made a sort of sarcastic musical out of it, just watch...
