Cydia Gets an Update and Becomes Much Faster

Cydia. Love it or hate it, it's one of the pillars of the jailbreak community. When Cydia acquired Rock a few months ago, Saurik made the promise that he would work on improving Cydia's speed, which, let's be honest, leaves a lot to be desired.

So we knew for a while that it was being worked on by Saurik and Chpwn, but with the release of the recent jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, we've had a taste of where Cydia is going, and I like that a lot.

While the changes in the new release of Cydia aren't much "esthetically visible" as most of it happens under the hood, if you have the new Cydia on your iPhone, you must have noticed some speed improvement...

NoWiggle is a tweak for jailbroken iPhones that prevents your app icons from dancing around on the screen when you tap and hold them. This was affectionately and hilariously referred to by Steve Jobs as "jiggle mode" during a recent media event.

Why anyone would want to remove jiggle mode is anyone guess, since it makes it apparent that you could accidentally move or delete an app; but hey, that's what jailbreaking is about, customizing the iPhone experience to your liking...

Call me crazy, but I'm convinced that there's a special roundtable meeting each week at Apple where all they do is sit around projector and examine what jailbreak apps released the previous week.

I can hear it now; "Uh, yeah, and uh, PhotoAlbums+! Yeah, uh, that looks like something we should have had from the, uh, very beginning, let's use that!"

New Tweak Allows AirPlay Streaming from Any iOS App

AirPlay just got the jailbreak treatment. AirPlay (one of Apple's new technologies in iOS 4.2) allows streaming video to be pushed from any iOS device to an Apple TV.

AirPlay is only intended to allow streaming from the iPod and YouTube app, but this new jailbreak tweak opens up AirPlay possibilities to any playable media on an iOS device...

I think the majority of people are in agreement that one of the key features that the iPhone has lacked over the years, and continues to lack, is a competent notification system.

Sure we have push notifications, but those can be incredibly disrupting and intrusive. Then there's the app icon badges, which serve their purpose, but can quickly litter your homescreen with a mess of little red icons.
