Apple is set to announce earnings for its fiscal 2013 fourth quarter (translating to the third calendar quarter) on Monday, October 28, according to today's note on the Apple Investor web page.

The conference call with investors is scheduled at 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern, after the markets close.

Eagle-eyed watchers will be keeping an eye on newswire services as Apple usually posts a media release announcing key quarterly metrics just after 1:30pm Pacific / 4:30pm Eastern...

Cook to employees: take a Thanksgiving week off, you deserve it

"I realize many of you worked tirelessly to bring us this far. I know it required great personal sacrifice," wrote Apple's boss Tim Cook in an email to the company's employees before making a surprise announcement.

"In recognition of your incredible efforts and achievements, I’m happy to announce that we’re extending the Thanksgiving holiday this year," reads the memo.

Although the extended Thanksgiving holiday won't apply to Apple's retail and support army "so we can continue to serve our customers," the rest of Apple will shut down with pay on November 25, 26, and 27, Cook wrote. I've included the full contents of Cook's email to employees right below...

Apple boosts quarterly revenue guidance on strong iPhone 5s/5c sales

Nine million opening weekend iPhone sales is music to the ears of Wall Street. Matter of face, most analysts were expecting somewhere between five to ten million handsets so clearly launch numbers are on the high end of most people's expectations.

Needles to say, following the company's announcement this morning, $AAPL has surged toward $500 in pre-market trading. And now, encouraged by its own strong numbers, the Cupertino firm has increased its quarterly revenue guidance...

CEO Steve Ballmer will retire within 12 months, Microsoft confirms

I bet you haven't seen this coming. Microsoft's controversial and enthusiastic chief executive officer Steve Ballmer will retire within the next twelve months, the company said in a media release.

The company cunningly chose Friday to break the unexpected news so investors have the time to chew on the development over the weekend.

The Windows giant said Ballmer will retire as CEO upon the completion of a process to choose his successor. In the meantime, Ballmer will continue as CEO and will lead Microsoft "through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most"...

Apple buys Embark, maker of free transit apps

The former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin has some high-quality sources at Apple and has enjoyed the kind of unprecedented access to company executives that only News Corp. could bring to the table. In between forming a team of star bloggers for her upcoming news venture and tweeting, she finds time to post an exclusive every once in a while. Back in July, for instance, Jessica scooped a story about Apple's rumored ad-skipping feature for an upcoming television service.

And during her WSJ tenure, she revealed that Apple had snapped up indoor GPS company WiFiSLAM for $20 million, confirmed a chip deal with TSMC and scooped many, many other exclusives. Today she broke on her blog that Apple has acquired another transit app startup, a small Silicon Valley upstart called Embark, for un undisclosed sum...

Former Hulu exec Pete Distad is now Apple’s VP of Product Marketing

Bloomberg last mont asserted Apple had poached Hulu executive Pete Distad to help push forward its stalling negotiations with media moguls and cable companies. According to a new report out today, the executive has now started work at Apple in marketing capacity: Hulu has killed Distad's bio page and the executive's LinkedIn profile now lists him as Apple's Vice President of Product Marketing.

Distad was Hulu's Senior Vice President in charge of marketing and distribution so he clearly knows a thing or two about the complex web of licensing deals, though it remains unclear if his product marketing role entails dealing with content owners at all...

Apple hires Levi’s exec to head US retail operations ahead of new product launches

As the search for its retail chief continues unabated following former SVP Ron Johnson's departure last year (I know, it hasn't worked out well for him), Apple has now made a surprising hire to help its US retail efforts, a credible blog has learned. Enrique Atienza, who served as SVP of Retail Americas and Global Store Operations at the clothing powerhouse Levi Strauss, has emerged as Tim Cook's pick for the top director position of Apple's US Retail operations, according to sources with knowledge of the hire...

Case maker Incipio buys portable speaker startup Braven

Incipio Technologies, the well-known maker of cases and other accessories for mobile products, today announced it is acquiring Braven for an undisclosed sum. If you're a sucker for mobile accessories, chances are you've heard of Braven by now. The company specializes in portable wireless Bluetooth speakers and was the first to produce a portable HD speaker / speakerphone that doubles as a cellphone charger.

The Irvine, California based Incipio hopes to broaden its portfolio by adding Braven's popular wireless speakers to its lineup...

Apple beefs up hiring in China

Heightened competition coming from both Western and local makers of inexpensive Android handsets coupled with lack of new product announcements and state-run media increasingly blasting Apple while favoring domestic companies have all added up to market share losses and a fourteen percent drop in revenue in what Tim Cook often refers to as Apple's "most important market" that is China.

Realizing it is losing ground in the massive 1.33 billion people market due to politics and competition, Apple has apparently responded by beefing up hiring in China, the Wall Street Journal has learned. Among the positions Apple seeks to fill: an environmental affairs program manager, a  security specialist and a store specialist...

Apple on a hiring spree for Taiwan’s upcoming R&D center

Earlier in the month, VR-Zone learned Apple was looking to establish a research and development (R&D) center in Taiwan where talented engineers will be working on the next-generation of iPhone product development, reporting directly to Apple’s headquarters in California.

DigiTimes today expands on the story, reporting the company is now actively recruiting engineers to fill a bunch of various roles, including packaging, quality control, hardware and software. Apple's recruiting efforts are said to have already attracted the attention of many IT engineers in Taiwan...

Investor Carl Icahn announces making a large investment in Apple, run for the hills!

Controversial billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn has announced on Twitter making a large investment in Apple. Touting a "large position" on the stock, he said he believed the stock to be "extremely undervalued" and revealed having a "a nice conversation" with Apple CEO Tim Cook earlier today, which Apple has officially confirmed now.

Needles to say, Apple doomsayers came out of the woodwork screaming "There goes Apple!" Another conversation would follow soon, Icahn tweeted out. He did however let slip he may press Apple to use its cash pile to repurchase more of its shares from the public, perhaps in an effort to reduce the company's exposure to fickle Wall Street investors and crazypants analyst...

Bob Mansfield detached himself from executive duties to focus on chips and wearables

Apple haters had a field day learning SVP of Technologies was stripped of his executive title this past Sunday. Nevermind that Technologies was created specifically for Mansfield last August by combining Apple's wireless and semiconductor teams and that he actually wanted to be relieved of executive responsibilities.

The org change was confirmed in a SEC filing and Apple cryptically said Mansfield will remain with the company to work on special projects, reporting directly to Tim Cook. Now, some watchers were quick to jump ahead of themselves and interpret the move as a bad sign for Apple and its celebrated hardware guru, who was un-retired at Tim Cook's request just a year ago.

Some even went as far to speculate Mansfield had fallen out of favor with Cook, which couldn't be farther form truth. That's certainly not what I've been hearing, along with other pundits who insist Apple engineers are loving the chubby executive a lot.

Other sources in the know have stepped forward, too, underscoring you could hear the same sentiment echoed throughout the corridors of 1 Infinite Loop. Yes, Mansfield was crucial to development of Apple's biggest hits, including the iMac, iPhone and iPad, but don't fret - he's not really going anywhere. Jump past the fold for the full reveal...
