The iKit NuCharge: an iPhone 5 battery case with interchangeable covers

When it comes to battery cases for the iPhone 5, there's no shortage of options. Mophie itself offers a few choices—the Juice Pack Air and the Helium Juice Pack—and there are countless offerings from other third party manufacturers.

But that doesn't mean the space couldn't use another contender. And the folks of Shark Design think they have what it takes to be a big one with their iKit NuCharge. They say it's the "most advanced iPhone battery case ever made..."

Mophie announces new, thinner Juice Pack Air for iPhone 5

Fans of Mophie's popular Juice Pack Air line will be happy to hear that the company has just announced a new, thinner model for Apple's latest handset. This is the first significant update to the line in two years.

Aside from the prestige of its highly-regarded creators, the major selling point for the new Air is its size—it's both thinner and lighter than its predecessor, measuring in at just 0.63-inches thick...

iOS 6.1 battery problems may be related to Exchange bug

Yesterday, we reported that Vodafone UK has been sending out text messages to its iPhone 4S subscribers, warning them not to upgrade to iOS 6.1. The update is said to contain a bug that affects the handset's 3G performance, and subsequently its battery life.

But the issue appears to be more widespread than that. We've received a number of comments from readers, that aren't in the UK and don't have a 4S, that are seeing similar battery life problems. And it's been discovered that Exchange might just be the culprit...

BatteryPeek shows your battery percentage only when needed

There are times when it's useful to know exactly how much battery life you have left on your phone. But since you're not checking it every second, the percentage meter mostly just adds clutter to the status bar.

With the new BatteryPeek tweak in Cydia, you can have the best of both worlds: the tweak will hide the percentage meter, until you actually want to know how much power you have left...

Vodafone UK warns iPhone 4S owners not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to 3G bug

Vodafone UK subscribers with an iPhone 4S who haven't upgraded to iOS 6.1 may want to hold off on doing so. The carrier is currently sending out text messages to customers stating that there's a bug in the new firmware.

According to the warning, the issue has to due with 3G performance. Apparently 4S users on Vodafone UK have been experiencing problems with both cell service and battery life since updating to the latest version of iOS...

Mophie unveils Helium Juice Pack for iPhone 5

This must be 'unveil your latest product' week for accessory makers. Logitech took the wraps off its new Ultrathin Keyboard for the iPad mini yesterday, Griffin just announced new designer iPhone 5 cases, and now Mophie has come forward.

The California-based designer and manufacturer introduced the iPhone 5 version of its popular battery case line today, the Juice Pack Helium. The case is 13% thinner than any previous Juice Pack, and features a built-in 1500mAh battery...

Use iFunBox’s ‘Power Saving Mode’ to prevent select apps from running in the background

Want to take a load off your iOS device's CPU, battery life, and cellular bandwidth by preventing certain apps from running in the background? Sure, you could install a tweak like WeeCloseApps, but it doesn't set automatic profiles for app behavior, and it doesn't work on non-jailbroken devices.

Luckily, there's a powerful iOS file browser for Mac and PC called iFunBox, which works on both jailbroken and non-jailbroken devices. Among its features, iFunBox allows users to edit 'Power Saving Mode' profiles. Right click on an installed app and you can set one of three multitasking states: allow background, always background, and kill switch. 'Allow background' is the default state of most apps, while 'always background' is normally applied to music and podcasting apps that you'd want active in the background, and 'kill switch' is applied to power-hungry games...

‘Bolt’ hides the battery from the status bar, displays simple logo while charging

You might have noticed that it is uncharacteristically redundant of Apple to have the accurate battery percentage meter beside a graphical representation of the remaining battery life. The interface only needs one or the other, though it's still good to have an indicator on whether the power cord is connected. Personally, my preference is to stick with the percentage meter and ax the logo.

Bolt is an old jailbreak tweak that we neglected to feature when it debuted in 2011. The tweak is a relatively simple MobileSubstrate hack that removes the space-hogging battery icon from the Status Bar, but still displays a small lightning bolt icon while your device is charging...

CES 2013: Griffin’s new PowerDock charges five devices simultaneously

Griffin Technology is on a roll at CES 2013. Among the product announcements they made at the show is this ultimate charging station that I'd definitely make good use of, the PowerDock 5. As the name implies, the main advantage is its  design which makes possible charging of up to five iPhones, iPods or iPads at once, an indispensable feature for families that mostly use Apple's mobile products (I know, filthy rich people).

Each of its five charging bays conveniently has a 10-watt, 2.1-amp power supply so you can store and charge, say, five power-hungry, full-size third and fourth generation iPads simultaneously. As if that weren't enough, the badass accessory even accommodates your iPads in their cases. What more could you ask from a charging station?

Apple researching ‘realistic’ wireless charging methods

Apple has filed for a patent to solve one of mankind's most troubling questions: how do I recharge my iPad with this annoyingly-short power cord? In the application, the company suggests a 'realistic' way to wirelessly recharge your iDevice via near-field resonance. While near-field technology is more often used to grab data off your credit card at the grocery store, Apple sees the technology as a way to cut the cord between your laptop, iPad or iPhone and a wall charger, the way your mouse was set free years prior...

Apple picks new battery supplier, drops Samsung

Apple has chosen two China-based battery companies to supply the iPad and MacBook, says a Friday report. Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery would replace Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of the South Korean firm that is both Apple's chief rival and largest supplier. The report is just the latest indicating Samsung and Apple are reconsidering their close relationship.

As the two smartphone giants attempt to out-compete each other in the courtroom and store shelves, Samsung's role appears to be shifting from major supplier to important manufacturer...

Battery Status provides spoken and pop-up battery alerts

Battery Status is a jailbreak tweak that will keep you informed about the status of your iOS device's battery. Battery Status provides either a spoken or pop-up alert, or a combination of the two — with both outlaying your current battery life situation.

This $0.99 tweak will tell you how much battery life you have remaining, how much you need to get to 100%, and how long it will take you to get to a fully charged battery. Take a look at our video walkthrough inside for a full synopsis of how it works.
