Why the iPhone doesn’t have audible turn-by-turn directions

Thanks to my years in wireless sales, I can honestly say I've tried out more than my fair share of smartphones. The carrier I worked for made us try a new handset every 90 days to ensure that we were all well-versed in our craft.

But out of all of the devices I played with and carried, none were able to woo me away from the iPhone. In fact, the only non-iOS feature that I have ever really lusted after was Android's ability to give audible turn-by-turn directions...

Apple TV SDK to launch at WWDC: apps finally coming to your telly

A new report published this morning claims that Apple will seed developers with a brand new Apple TV software development kit (SDK) as early as its annual developers conference which kicks off with a San Francisco keynote next Monday.

Conceivably, the goal of the SDK would be to foster growth of the third-party app ecosystem around the Apple TV, the $99 set-top box which remains closed to app developers (unless you jailbreak, that is)...

Apple Campus 2 plans show massive underground auditorium for pressers and exhibitions

The City of Cupertino has released a new set of high-resolution technical drawings for Apple's upcoming ring-shaped Campus 2 facility. The official documents depict the iSpaceship building, including underground parking space for nearly five thousand cars and a massive auditorium where Apple will hold media events.

So if you thought past media events were magical and spellbinding, Apple's future press conference are bound to knock your socks off once Campus 2 officially opens some time in 2015...

Apple’s marketing boss Phil Schiller profiled as Mini-Me and Dr. No

Bloomberg Businessweek ran an interesting profile of Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller who after CEO Tim Cook is said to be under tremendous pressure to fill the void following Steve Jobs' passing last October.

In a way, he is in charge of what's known as the world's greatest marketing machine. Schiller, 52, controls a $1 billion global advertising budget and is responsible for Apple's 180-degree turn with new celebrity commercials.

He "has the daunting task of keeping Apple cool" and is very well aware that "he’ll get more than his fair share of blame if the new products aren’t hits"... 

Apple settles Australian ‘4G’ iPad dispute for $2.25 million

Apple has taken a lot of heat over the use of the '4G' term in the name of its latest iPad. While the tablet is indeed LTE-capable here in the States, it isn't in most other places. And some folks found that misleading.

Perhaps its most public battle has been in Australia, where Apple has been getting sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission over the moniker. But the headache appears to be almost over...

Google’s 2012 revenue? Two percent will come from iOS

Look, we already know Apple's iOS platform made Google four times the revenue of Android by end of 2011, courtesy of huge traffic coming from iOS device owners using preloaded search and mapping services from Google.

And as Apple is said to reduce its dependency on the search giant with a rumored in-house mapping service, Google's bottom line is becoming increasingly tied to the successes of Apple's iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Google's mobile advertising revenue? That's nearly all Apple. Looking at the big picture, the search Goliath will get up to two percent of its total revenue for the calendar year 2012 from the iOS platform...

Deciding enough is enough, judge scraps Apple-Motorola suit

Don't you just detest often silly legal proceedings in the technology business? I'm talking about an endless back and forth between Apple and Motorola over who copied whom, with no clear winner in sight.

Well, Apple's and Motorola's past childish behavior in the courtroom has really tested the limits of one judge's patience, who dismissed a patent infringement trial after hearing each side’s damages arguments.

This was bound to the first major lawsuit between Apple and Motorola following completion of the latter's acquisition by search giant Google...

Guess what, Eric Schmidt: devs still write for iOS first!

So mere four days before the WWDC keynote, Steve Jobs' favorite analytics company posts some peculiar numbers making Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt look ridiculous.

Though Android continues to lead the pack in terms of shipments, the iOS train just keeps on chugging along in terms of loyalty and profitability.

Seven out of ten mobile apps in the first five months of this year were built for Apple's platform, where developers on average earn four times more revenue...

Unlocked iPhone users on T-Mobile again reporting 3G data speeds

T-Mobile and the iPhone have a love-hate relationship. While the carrier often bashes the handset in its print ads and TV commercials, it obviously benefits from the 1 million+ unlocked iPhones on its network, and would love an official partnership.

Why else do you think the carrier continues to speak publicly about its plans to launch a new 4G network — one that would finally allow iPhones to get 3G data speeds? Because it's dying to show iPhone owners (and Apple) that it's willing to play ball...

Here’s all-new Google Earth crashing on iPad during yesterday’s presser

Our friend and former iDB writer Alex Heath points us to a short clip highlighting Google's embarrassment at yesterday's hastily organized press conference to announce "the next dimension in Maps". Instead, as pointed out by MG Siegler, the search Goliath revealed anxiety over Apple Maps.

Be that as it may, the fact remains that Google put up a pretty boring show, rushing out a new version of Google Maps and looking foolish in the process...
